I find it works, and works well. I'm one who, a lot of the time, selects my music via the folder method. Several other music management programs I've tried don't offer that option. It also allows effective management of the live queue list. One can have a Qobuz album, then add a local track into the middle of it, switch back to Qobuz, do this repeatedly, and then add an internet radio station to finish things off. I'm not a big set playlist person so the ability to build and edit queues on the fly is important to me.
I had a 60 day trial of Roon a few years back. It was nice, but I didn't really care about all of the extra things it did -- like it selecting to continue with "similar" music when the tracks I'd selected had finished, or all of the extra pictures and artist info it added. LMS does what I want to do and isn't a subscription service. Roon also struck me a bit the wrong way with it's "we know better what you want than you do" vibe.
I also have the WiiM app on my phone and would give it a nice second place, though its use is limited to WiiM players. I will also give WiiM kudos for listening to customer suggestions and constantly updating their app and firmware. The live queue aspect of the WiiM app still needs some futher work so I still like LMS better for that. But, as with anything software related these days, I don't expect anything to stand still. Who knows where things will stand in a year.
Follow Ups:
Roon also struck me a bit the wrong way with it's "we know better what you want than you do" vibe.I feel the exact same way, I used to visit the forum over there and the mod or dev used to have a very bad attitude. Even trolling people and arguing with people. Needless to say, once my trial was done I never looked back.
I would like to see a few minor changes with the Material Skin but don't know how to go about proposing it, I really don't feel like getting attacked on a forum for making a suggestion.
I was even thinking about forking the project since its open source and paying a dev a couple hundred dollars to make the changes.

What would you like changed? I confess that I prefer using iPeng across three different devices.
Strikes me as the best place to propose changes to Material Skin would be over at the LMS web site (link below.)
there's a lengthy Material Skin thread in the third party provider forum.
I think I found a dev.
Still need to work out some details, but it looks doable, even being able to continue to pull upstream changes from the original Material Skin's future changes.
Looks like I might be able to have my own personal version of Material Skin.

It has begun!

My rework of Material Skin is done, so glad I'm finally getting off of the endless marry-go-round of updates.
Only a few small changes but much more user friendly. And most of all no more endless/mindless/meaningless updates. Some devs make great projects but I really do think they end up on a mouse-wheel and don't know how to stop. Moode audio is the same way....change for the sake of change, and then change some more.

that capability is available by enabling an LMS plugin called "Don't Stop the Music" for those interested. I'm not.
That is one of the other neat things about LMS -- over the years there have been tons of plug-ins -- over 150 at current count -- created by individuals and available free-of-charge to anyone.
