In Reply to: RE: I would go with A6 Master with LHY PS + external DAC posted by Jon L on July 13, 2024 at 14:19:54
IMHO - From a sound quality perspective a plain stock A6 (non Master) with stock power supply probably makes the most sense especially if running an outboard DAC.The LPS doesn't do much at all for the streamer section IMHO. Since the external DAC will be in play instead of internal, Master upgrades to the A6 internal DAC and analog stage won't matter. And again since those sections of the A6 won't be in use the LPS won't contribute to any sonic gains.
I think the A6 is the obvious value leader but IF the goal is to REPLACE an outboard DAC -AND- REPLACE a preamp, the A8 makes a lot of sense..... assuming it has a great sounding DAC and preamp. Everything I've read says the A6 is 'bright', A6 Master is 'less bright', and the A8 is even 'less bright'. But they all seem to lean toward the bright side which is the opposite of what I prefer.
So a plain stock A6 with warmer more robust sounding DAC might be the way to go.

I don't know, Abe. If it's used as a DAC and preamp and if it isn't bright and sounds great, it might be a good purchase. But used as a streamer only $859 (Amazon's current price) seems a little expensive to me for just a streamer. I know it's got that 6" display but still... I did think about this unit but given the preamp and DAC I already have I decided my RPi 4 and picorePlayer were good enough.

My system is just fine. The preamp and amps work brilliantly for my speakers. I've got an RPi and USB DAC that sounds great.
Why change?
I'm perfectly happy.

I'm happy with the sound from my RPi and USB DAC too."Why change?"
I've thought about this. Maybe the bouncy VU meters? Maybe the multiple streaming Apps built into the streamer? Maybe the internal M.2 SSD for local music?
The lower-end WiiM Ultra ($329) might be a better choice IF it can drive an external USB DAC.

LOL! Bouncy VU meters?!!??
My problem with new stuff is that it's likely just a sideways change.
My other fear is that the UI and new learning the new phone apps that you'll need to change that may or may not be as good as I already had. Perhaps the UI would be better, but honestly, I don't really care.
My motto is 'Don't fix it if it ain't broke.'

If you're just going to use it as a streamer with external dac, you may as well just get a Wiim Pro with external dac.
It's app now even has room correction.
I'm looking at these streamers that include a display. Possibly the WiiM Ultra IF it can drive an outboard USB DAC.
Anyway, just thinking out load about a possible new toy to play with.
The mfg's prelim specs say it will pass up to 24/192 native to USB, coax, and Toslink, but who knows until it hits the street? Doesn't say anything about DSD.
Yes to Tidal and Roon, but nothing about Qobuz. Not Airplay certified yet.Looks like a nice little unit.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
