Daphile is interesting. Though I don't have any usb dacs. Are you limited to usb? Also I do have a $20 usb/optical converter, would that be a weak link?

Dawnrazor - you don't "need" a USB input, but it helps. To get optimal audio, you'd want the PC to output a digital signal. Typically that's going to be USB unless your PC's sound card has an optical or coaxial digital output. Otherwise, you're likely going to have to route the signal out of your PC"s analog (1/8" jack) output to your stereo system.
Your USB to optical converter may/may not be a weak link. Depends on how well it does the job, and whether the DAC that will be fed the optical output cleans up any jitter. But even if the converter isn't the best, it will still provide an avenue to give Daphile a try.
thanks! I guess I could just try it since I have another computer and the adapter. I was hoping to use my virtual sound card but it is just mac or windows. Linux support is sketchy.
There was a thread where a well known poster mentioned that an hdmi to spdif adapter sounded better than the usb output. Wonder if something like that could work?
