actually, doesn't - for example - a 7tb mechanical drive require a lot more power than say a 16gb USB stick?
That is part of my problem I think...
Follow Ups:
How full is your 7tb drive? I don't even know how you have a 7tb drive. Usually, it would be 6 or 8tb.
Anyway, I have about 1.2TBs to store about 45K songs mostly in WAV format. A 2TB SSD would likely be more than enough and would use nearly no power versus a 7,200RPM spinner.

A 16 GB stick isn't practical unless you have a tiny music collection. Having said that, I occasionally use an Oppo player in the HT with a 400 GB microSD card that contains all my digital music.
I think what's most important is how you connect your DAC. I am not a fan of attaching a DAC directly to a general purpose computer via USB.
My digital library along with media server software lives on a NAS (with mirrored SSDs) located in the office far from the primary music systems. It connects to the tiny players via Ethernet or WiFi providing isolation.

While pricey now, note that 1.5 TB cards are now available!
Wow thats amazing. I bought the 512gb card I mentioned just now with an $8 off coupon. Its pretty amazing how they can keep getting so much data in a small space.

And so cheaply! 2 TB SSDs now run about $100 so I use a pair of them in a mirrored array in my NAS.
I thought it was Moore's Law but then thought that was just computing power and well you know how the computer police can be so I didn't mention that. But yeah its crazy how much the costs have come down while sizes have gone up. I am super lucky that my collection is only about 128gb uncompressed but am backing up the computer too so need the extra room.
Size used to be the limitation for going "computer audio" but no longer.

It is about the number of transistors on a chip . Which can be used in different ways.
Before the 400 GB cards were available, I used a pair of 256 GB USB drives to play content on an Oppo 103. Still have them but they are huge by comparison.
Thanks for the explanation.
Yeah I have a couple of 512gb hard drives I used to back up a clients classical disk collection and those are old school big heavy drives.
One day they will get enough transistors on chips to replace our brains...
