The usual problem that you have with nearly all passives is interconnect cable control. This manifests as less bass/impact at lower volume control settings.
The way your system is set up, its likely that you are running the control at higher positions, which reduces this problem! So if you are getting adequate volumes, I would expect that you are doing OK.
Follow Ups:
Hi Ralph! I guess you are the Ralph who built my amp, and I must say it is some piece of art. I was listening to an old Can CD yesterday (Mute remastering), quite an aural experience!
I have another question, since we are on the subject of passive pre-amp.
My passive is quite simple: it is just two pots, value=100K.
Do you have any opinions on the output impedance of passive that would be a good match? Some people are advocating strongly against 100K for a 100K input, saying that 10K would be more "theoritically" correct. I am very curious to know if you had any concrete experience on that specific subject.
Thanks!
Usually you want a lower impedance and 10K is a good value. The problem is that with a passive, the 10K is the impedance that your source will have to drive. It might not be so happy with that, so then you have to run a higher resistance in the passive, which can be troublesome for interconnect control.
In your case you are avoiding this (I assume) by running your control at a higher setting all the time, on account of your source is only 2 volts. So I would not worry about it if what I just said is true.
well actually, no...When i was using my Rogers LS 3/5a speakers (82.5 dB), my volume knob would go somewhere between 1 and 3 o'clock (maximum being 5 o'clock)...
but now i have high-efficiency speakers and the volume knob will usually stay between 9 o'clock and 12... the inter-connects between the amp and the pre-amp are short and good though...
I may change the passive in the near future, and we were thinking going for a 50K, or maybe even a 10K. Impendance is a difficult notion for me, why a source would not be happy to drive a 10K passive?
