Hi Ralph,
Warm becomes nearly too hot to touch at the top of the transformer laminations after 2-3 hours. Is this normal? It's about the same temperature as the chassis back panel after full warm-up. It remains cool at the perimeter of the windings themselves, however.
Follow Ups:
Some of the transformer heat in the older MkIIs comes from the rear panel as the filament regulators run rather warm. This is to provide adequate headroom if the AC line is a little low.
If the windings are too hot to touch that is a different matter.
Thanks for your help, Ralph. I remounted & resoldered Crees in the 128V unregulated supplies. It's working well now & Cree Schottkys sound great in those positions.
Hello, I'm in the process of building the Beast OTL boards and noticed the disscusion about the Cree diodes, I just happen to have installed some older 1000v-1 amp Crees in the 700v rail. I have some Fairchild RURP8100's sitting around, I'm concidering pulling the cree's and installing the Fairchild diodes instead. would this be a wise choice.
I've had good results using large external heat sinks at the rear of the chassis, on which the filament voltage regulators are mounted, to take a lot of heat away from the chassis proper.
