Well, supposedly she was/is struggling a whole life with depression related illness and being world wide famous once she made it a public affair. Not unlike all the rest of "stars" did and are still doing. Unfortunately she didn't age well.
If it comes to religion my take is that people have war and fighting in their genes. Take religion out and they will fight about something else and what stood as a religion driven conflict was often motivated by politics and economics. Its academic though because religion will never die since it is essential part of human experience for most of the population and for significant amount of "higher class people" too. You're making a mistake with equaling religion with church. Churches are institutions often driven by their own agendas. They are indispensable in their role but ultimately flawed like all human organizations are.
I hear you about the "happy countries" without red hat dimwits and religion. I don't buy all that happiness. To most in US it's the best country in the world. The belief based on pure conviction since "most" never set a foot in other country . A conviction enforced by the belief that EVERYBODY wants to come here. All the dimwits and a future red hat wearers are flocking from every shi...hole in the world. I bet there is a similar set of believes making the population to declare the happiness related to being a citizens of happy country

The people who tend to come to the USA are generally well educated and gravitate to higher learning institutions like Harvard/Yale/MIT etc. America is a large country with essentially 50 countries joined together to form a union of countries - like Europe. Going to Vermont or Washington or New York State State is entirely different than going to Texas or Kentucky.
The people are different and so is the culture and so is the belief system and so is the amount of religion.
Religion can encompass not just God but also religion to an economic belief system or political belief system or nationalism which is a religious adherence to the land you happen to be born upon. I was born in Canada so I root for Team Canada at the Olympics. But it's arbitrary - had I been born in Australia - that would be "my team" if I were born in the middle east I'd belong to Islam. Whatever place you are born is the heavy dose of brainwashing you get from birth. If you were born in the Middle East you will be taught Islam and you will grow up in that religion.
In the US - you will get their bizarre versions of Christianity where Jesus has a 401k and never help anyone but your personal bank account. Care about the fetus and never the child sort of wackadoodle nonsense.
I get it - people are afraid of death and want to believe they will live on and religions comfort them that they are "special" or "the chosen ones of their God" - it's a lovely fairy tale and they keep fanning it to remove you from your money. Give me 10% of your wealth and I will guarantee you a place in the afterlife. God can create the universe in 6 days (umm why did it take 6 - he is omnipotent it should take less than a nanosecond) but he can do all that and still doesn't understand money - you have to donate. Uggh. It's just all so dumb and obvious money grab.
Vast majority of people who immigrate to US are not well educated or not educated at all. Yes there is a talent drain from all over the world to attract the best brains and US has the money to pay for it and it does but it's a relatively small group. The truth is for majority of people from civilized countries of first and second world US has nothing to offer except that elusive perpetual dream.
Yes, to build churches, monasteries, sponsor art, architecture and education all of it costs money. Priests education takes several years and yourself you expect decent compensation for your enlightened services in the school. Take the religion out and 90% of art disappears from the existence. Religion is not hanging in the ether of mysticism for the few. It offers a practical guidance for the regular folk. Most people who have some structured system of beliefs tend to do better in life and it's not because they are scared of death. It's simply a function of human subconsciousness.
I don't follow you too well here but if we ended religion tomorrow we would not lose art or the stories or the music associated with religion. Like any fairy tale one can appreciate the likes of "The Lord of the Rings" or Star Trek. One can enjoy the stories of the Greek Gods who at the time people believed in - art and statues were created.
A Christian can go to India and enjoy the art without believing in their religion.
Everyone is an Atheist about every other God but their own. An Atheist just goes 1 God further.
"Most people who have some structured system of beliefs tend to do better in life." That structure does not need to come from religion. Poor countries are the most religious because their lives are horrible so they need to believe that in the next life things will be better. Happy wealthy nations have no use for fairy tales - they know there is one life and you better try and enjoy it while you can.
They are more successful in large part because they believe in science and facts and do not as easily succumb to conmen like Trump and Evangelicals and QAnon. If you are gullible enough to buy into the fairy tale of religion you are gullible enough to think Trump is chosen by God and the Jews are firing space lasers at California.
When looking at religion the problem is there are so many of them and they can't all be right and people kill if you don't agree with them.
As Richard Dawkins points out. Non-thinking = faith.
