Follow Ups:
Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Beach Boys, and Mamas and Papas all deserve to be celebrated and exposed to younger listeners.
It did smack of self promotion on Jacob Dylan's part.
Hopefully someone someday will tell the story of that interesting/vibrant scene that doesn't
feel the need to (poorly) replicate the music and style and constantly interject their ego into it all.Hey! THERE'S Jakob Dylan wearing vintage garb and driving his vintage car down SUNSET STRIP!
Again. GROOVY!!!!!
Most of the sections with the old coots were just plain sad.
The timeline of the development of folk into folk/rock/ singer/songwriters and the Laurel Canyon
scene was also skewered into a fashion to support the POV of the filmmaker.Where were Joni Mitchell:
When I first came out to L.A. [in 1968], my friend [photographer] Joel Bernstein found an old book in a flea market that said: Ask anyone in America where the craziest people live and they'll tell you California. Ask anyone in California where the craziest people live and they'll say Los Angeles. Ask anyone in Los Angeles where the craziest people live and they'll tell you Hollywood. Ask anyone in Hollywood where the craziest people live and they'll say Laurel Canyon. And ask anyone in Laurel Canyon where the craziest people live and they'll say Lookout Mountain. So I bought a house on Lookout Mountain. -Joni Mitchell
Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, and a host of others that were in LC at the time?Probably gave it a pass being that Jakob Dylan seems to have as much sense of humor or charisma as a pet rock.
Someone should have done a documentary on LC 25 years ago when there would have been far more brain cells involved AND no Jakob Dylan.
Better yet, just focus around the plethora of great tunes/videos that emanated from there, use text from biographies of them that were there and have Peter Coyote narrate it.
Eliminates the faux leather fringe and all that contains and implies.

Otherwise, I'd rather see the original artists doing the songs.
My wife and I thought the same as you. Where is Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, Jackson Browne, and the Eagles crew. Our thought was that it was limited to the early 60s.

Gail Zappa would have been a good interview... but she died a couple years
ago and the young Zappa's woulda been too young.
Plus the LC music scene JD was obsessing over and Frank Zappa have little in common
except location.
Some Eagles were mentioned.
That Neil Young didn't participate was weird too.
It seemed to tip into the later '60's but after a certain point we really didn't care.
Anyway, the Laurel Canyon project at the link would seem to be a better deal at this
point in time. NO mention of Jakob Dylan either...

Damn. It wasnt that bad and had some facts I didnt know. Im not as old as you guys. It did inspire me to listen to Pet Sounds. Brian is incredible but after all the hype for PS I get that it inspired Sgt. Pepper, nice harmonies some interesting sounds but... Goid Vibrations is their best tune. Several boy girl weak tunes. It was a let down. I had never heard a Beach Boys album just radio play. Yawn
A couple of the JD remade tunes were good. And come on you the Mustang convertable was cuz of the 60's film that was interspersed within the film.
Ragging that peoole were missing? Come on how many of those you mentioned were asked but refused or had other stuff going on.
I liked them visiting the old studios too and Brians piano in the living room with just sand on the floor. How many knew that? I didn't.
Good enough for me. I did not like mostvof the JD tunes.

You don't see Ken Burns in every other shot when he does his documentaries.
I'd have liked to had a better interviewer and more video of the originals performing their music. There was just no meat to the whole thing.
Yes, and where was Joni????
Smartly steered clear.
