It always depends on the music people like. The Bodyguard had the Whitney Houston song "I Will Always Love You" which was played and played and overplayed for a decade after the movie.
And of course people who hate pop music endlessly shredded that song. My prediction is that this song Shallow is very likely to garner similar longevity as the above or Celine Dion's Titanic track.
Apples to apples comparisons this pop song is likely to have very wide appeal.
Lastly, best original song usually has to fit the movie. So there is a limited number of competing efforts. So that, I agree, dilutes the magnitude of the award. I would prefer an academy awards at the end of each decade. And the list of five nominees for best picture of the 1990s are:
Then Hollywood might be able to come with a list of 5 films that could have people discuss and fight over 5 truly great movies. Usually there are 5 okay movies and the odd year 1 or 2 really good ones and the rest just fill the spots. This would apply to Song as well.
