3.7i 9000 2.7x 10000?
Follow Ups:
If I remember correctly Michael Hoatsen Magnepan's #1 dealer, said the 2.7X uses a thinner mylar (also used in 30.7) for the midrange which gives better detail. Also various tweaks like stiffening of the frame via steel inserts in the construction of the MDF frame, plus some other tweaks that I'm brain farting on. Not to mention the upgraded crossover's
The thinner mylar requires a different fastening method and different tensioning, all of the other tweaks combine to require more time and effort to assemble. So that increases labor costs, also I believe that it has been discussed before but Magnepan is trying to sell to a more upscale market with some of their new products.
And yes Magnepan is trying to become a more profitable company, I heard that for many years cost increase's were kept to a minimum. Well eventually that can become untenable, making current price increases seem kind out of wack.
These are the explanations I have been told, as to how much you believe is up the individual. Just try to not to shoot the messanger, I don't work for them. My employer is the TSA (screening passengers and luggage, just like in the Netflix movie Carry On.
While I am a fan of Magnepan, I'm not a FanBoi. As evidence my mains have switched from 3.6's to JBL 4367's large hybrid horn speakers. However my desktop system is Mini Maggie's with two DWM's.
Sadly, the middle class audiophile has been squeezed financially. Dealers now sell to the rich, so high end companies have had to shift towards that market.
I do know that Magnepan still wants their line to cover a wide range, so I think we'll continue to see "bang for the buck" models. The 2.7i is an example of that -- what with inflation putting the 3.7i out of the reach of many, it was developed to bring true ribbon performance back into a range that middle class audiophiles can afford.
The existence of the "X" versions doesn't mean that the regular versions sound any less good than they used to. They're just given customers more of a choice.
Agree with you entirely...I cannot pick a fight with Magnepan when the price of a dental implant in NYS or NJ is $7000...I still enjoy my 3.5's. and never had a single issue with them, except for the stands...I never biamped them..I hope you enjoy your speakers whatever model you choose.Good listening for the holidays
Don't talk to me about the price of dental implants. :-) I could have 30.7's in my bathroom if I didn't have to pay for dental implants.
It galls me no end that they cost as much as a high end loudspeaker.
I mean, they're just a metal screw, put in with a miniature Dremel . . .
My Dremel actually came with a warning not to use it for dentistry. I wonder how many people have fixed their teeth on the cheap? :-)
A Dental mafia filled with collusion and price-fixing .As the state of your teeth defines an important part of the state of your health;one can see why health outcomes are the poorest of the developed countries in the US...My gov't insurance covers 1% of the price of an implant
Also very hard to sue them.
For me it has been the price of the Sound Labs 845
I've sometimes wondered why this stuff was so expensive, but I never thought of collusion and price fixing! Guess I'm just an innocent. I'm thinking of doing dental tourism -- a friend had it done in Cancun and had great results.
Friends live in Costa Rica. It cost them $1200...You can also check Canada; last time I checked it was $2500---they advertise in the Canadian papers.
I didn't know that about Canada.
The place my friend recommended in Mexico charges 1/4 to 1/2 what they charge here.
Time to start researching this before everything falls out!
I mentioned Canada because the fare or drive is cheaper....since it has to be done twice.
