Yes. Seriously -
Earphones project sound into your head.
Here the auditory scene is realistic.
Follow Ups:
Sombetzki have something similar for nearfield listening. https://www.sombetzki-elektrostaten.de/
From that website:
"Why does ESL Home have to be set up so close to the listening position?
The proximity to the listener promotes the correct sounding reproduction. The listening room adds interference to the original music signal during remote playback (as is common with speakers). This can be avoided by placing it close (up to 1 meter)."
They make a good case for solution to a lot of audiophile problems. Apartment dwelling would benefit from a mass adoption of this outlook on things.

The point is to use line-sources to achieve a wide-band near-field condition.
The attached graph is from Appendix 2 - Line source Near field listening distance (Griffin)
Look at the graph where the listening distance is less than 3 feet (90cm) and the line source length is 5 feet (150cm). In this case, near field condition cover from 300 Hz and up.
That is why I am promoting a long line-source in close-up distance.
Near field is an acoustic term used to define an area where the direct sound (from source) power is stronger than the indirect (reflected) sound
