Right!
The nearfield is here within a close range.
Distance from ear to speaker is 60 to 70cm.
Width is about 120 degrees which is wider than the normal 60 degrees. That's like in first seat row in concert hall.
Here, soundstage, imaging and depth from good recordings sounds great.
If less concentrated listening, the chair is pulled back a bit.

Lars
Follow Ups:
I have a pair of LRS's in a basic 3rds setup in a 17x12 room. Speakers are about 4 feet or so into the room; listening chair is about 5 feet from the speaker plane. Very basic. I use my LRS's tweeters out and facing full forward, no toe in.
If I use a very short stool (or sit cross legged) in or just slightly behind the speaker plane, a notably vivid soundstage forms from the backwall reflection. This soundstage operates differently from how it normally works (it is entirely inside the speaker plane, miniaturized somewhat) but is uncanny in its 3d image.
My ears are about 40 cms from each speakers in the low stool listening position, I just measured.
Is this the basic effect? I tried sitting slightly in front of the speaker plane and it is wider. But if you listen on the speaker plane or a little behind it, the backwall dominates entirely.

You write "notably vivid soundstage forms from the backwall reflection."
Inmy setup, reflections are below -20dB the audio signal. So in this nearfield (above 300Hz) you hear no refletions from the room. You hear only what is recorded.

A picture tells more than words!
The different setup of front speakers ELS line sources with elements from ER Audio versus Magnepan 3.6. With the ELS line sources the listening distance can be much closer 0,7meters versus 2meters. Offcourse, it is only temporary for comparison. The Magnepans have been refurbished with new wooden fronts.
It's important to understand that short listening distance require speaker elements that cover the full range above the Schroeder range, that is approx. in the range of 6 octaves. This require some narrow planars or coaxial's.
I am aware of elements like GRS PT6825-8 Planar Mid/Tweeter, ER Audio 505 or coaxials like KEF LS50 etc.
Ok, you have them tilted in. The picture confirms I do know what you are getting at though.
If I sit (in the low stool) a foot *in front* (in other words, moving my listening chair from 5 feet to one feet, and lowering the chair to using a short stool) of my speaker plane, I get a very rich field of sound that is not dominated by the backwall reflection.
A foot away, my ears are 50-60 cm from the speaker panel. At my usual modest volume level, I think I "see" what you are hearing.
It's very workable even as a simple stereo plan. I don't need to toe them in toward me, and still got a fulsome sound field.
"Immersive" is the word I would use.
I normally sit at 5-6 feet distance. But sometimes I move to 4 feet. It's a continuous effect.
Happy listening. I hear you about age. Very much so. I lost cicadas this year.
