avoiding toxic fluids is always wise, but motor oil should be changed at least once a year, because the additive packages become oxidized over time.
I always have a good roll of paper towels just in case, and to wipe everything down as needed, but my oil changes are clean and controlled, as the task becomes more repetitious.
Replacing the drain bolt with a stay in place valve cleaned things up quite a bit , it's as predictable as turning on any valve, and a dedicated filter wrench lessons any surprises when the filter is loosened , plus I work in protective gloves.
Follow Ups:
My old Honda Civic rarely gets used any more, maybe 1X a week ? Maybe I'm a bit too uptight about this, but I hate wasting oil.
But the consequences of running oxidized oil mostly have to do with slightly decreased oil flow, I thought. I mean, it's not gonna totally kill the engine, right ?
...which in my case is just about 3,000 miles.
I do my wife's car twice per year, too, which is nowhere near 3K miles but it's a Hyundai and those engines don't tolerate dirty or contaminated oil.
My car has 129,000 miles on it. I don't think I'll live long enough to get it to 200K.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
