You need to arrange springs in wide pattern for speakers that have high center of gravity COG. And the springs have to have the correct stiffness for the weight of the speaker. Therefore, two 2x4s placed under each speaker allows 4 springs to be placed under the 2x4s in a wide pattern. Like an outrigger canoe. The springs can be quite stiff for this purpose since the lowest frequency of the speakers is relatively high which helps stability. For subwoofers which do not have a high COG springs can be placed directly under the subwoofer.

  How much do the springs raise floor standing speakers?
  I mean, more than any rug?
