also, just to keep things straight, consider a reconed EV 15b (bruce edgar's favorite) to have as your reference. you may find that beating this will take some effort. in particular, none of the jbl woofers i tried could. its only 'weakness' is some graininess compared to 'finer' woofers. and this might not be noticed unless its being A/B-ed directly against other speakers.
Follow Ups:
My Edgarorn Titan II's (built in 2003) came with EVM 15L's which curved much higher than necessary, so I found some JBL 2220 H's, which, I can only surmise, were his favorite in 2007, when I saw a posted schematic by another member here. It was the 3 rd and best woofer I tried.
vintage woofers are all over the map. the 4 pairs of 2220 i had on hand to experiment looked brand new-ish but sound-wise they were tired and boring. i have tried out 10 pairs of 515b and 15 pairs of 415z/a . most different sounding. i think re-coning gives a better idea of performance.. but its not clear that re-coned units match originals in behavior. if i had to choose, a re-coned vintage unit would be pr eferable to both 'original' cone vintage woofers and modern woofers. that os my data experience so far. it might change if it get different data points.
True indeed. I have a pair of 22220s, both bought newly reconed by the local factory-authorized service (thus presumably re-magnetized). They have different cone masses, by about 20% IIRC.
the murmurs in background that i hear are that original cones are better and lighter. hence speaker would sound better. my own listening tests do not support this . of course, other factors besides cone are at play, so nothing is clear to me except that gpa 515c is the safest bet even though the stated T/S specs on gpa 515c are not ideal for horn loading and differ from original altec515c/515b.
"gpa 515c is the safest bet even though the stated T/S specs on gpa 515c are not ideal for horn loading and differ from original altec515c/515b."
Even if the "new spec" were identical to the old spec, I find that charging 6-8 Times the amount of money for a driver that's supposedly made from the original Altec tooling to be more than a bit excessive.
You can get Pro drivers with Neo magnets today for much less $$ that will outperform them in the right horn or custom bass reflex box.
I have found many of the older drivers 30-40 years old that have the same as original Measured Thiele/Small Parameters that work just fine, if they have "mud magnets" and no Alnico, which are over rated.

Amen to that, especially when modern drivers have Vas a third to a quarter that of vintage designs as well as considerably higher Xmax and Pe.
They are not tired and boring when they meet their original T/S parameters that are easily measured. Especially with Ceramic Magnets which, unilike AlNico, don't demagnetize over time and abuse.
I am pretty sure you know that the AlNiCo magnets in the vintage woofers can benefit greatly from recharging.
There's value added in measuring the T/S parameters of any vintage drivers, even if it is only to match a pair for use in stereo, I think. :)

I posted that very thing before I read this one. All taken care of.
