Just purchased a pair of Altec 604-8G in 620A cabinets . Heard them in an unfinished basement with a small Marantz receiver and older Philips CD player, no particular care taken to set these up or optimize them in anyway, and I was blown away by them. They sounded just incredible. The cabinets are mint, the drivers themselves are original, one had the felt "dust protecteor" removed from behind the horn, but otherwise these appear to be mint. Gave them a good workout playing "Super Bass" with Ray Brown (that was the only CD I grabed as I rushed out the door to look at these, you gotta move fast when a Classic shows up on your local newsgroup!!)
Will get them home tonight and start them off with my Quad II mono blocks. Are any Inmates using this model?, What amps are you using. My first serious forray into Hi-Efficiency speakers. I had a brief stint with a pair of Altec 19s, but they were not for me, also have tried Tannoy 12" Golds in Belvederes but I guess these Altecs are possible keepers.
Thanks in Advance,
John T
Follow Ups:
The cabinets should probably look mint, they don't look like my original 620 boxes. Mine have a groove in the front baffle for the grill to fit into. I like the look of yours more than mine but I don't think they're originals. It also appears that there may be some internal bracing that is not in the originals, which is a good thing as well.
Kyle, They have been re-veneered apparently, there is extra bracing in them as well. I have had the controls (rheastats??) cleaned in the Crossovers and the operate well now, Photo of one of them on the bench. Hope to get them back together on Monday. Has anyone tried to replace a felt cover (the dust cover behind horn) on their own, can this be done??
that came in the UREI 813s I picked up locally. Mine were almost 30 years old, however, and may well have been run hard in a local recording studio where they sat in the walls for their entire lives. I pulled the 604s and sent them off to Bill at Great Plains Audio for reconing and magnet recharging. It wasn't expensive and the speakers really came back to life when they got back.
I then updated the caps in the crossover and they added even more tizz and bass slam to the end result.
I'd highly recommend both actions - especially if the felt around one of the horns is missing. That's your dust cap to protect the gap in the woofer's voice coil from attracting dust and magnetic particles.
BTW, I run both tube and SS amps with these and they shine with both. They've been used for mixing down recordings of my bands and for evaluating the sonic results of restoring old Mac tube amps. You should like the setup of Altec and Quad tube gear, too.
Cheers,
David
I have owned a pair for about 2 years and love them. I am running mine with a pair of MC40 tube monos. My crossovers test strong and are currently are still original, but I have been thinking of the Markwardt design for these. There are also some new crossovers labeled "Supercrossovers" being built for the 604-8G but are about $750 a pair. This po' boy can't afford to even think about that, though I wish I could.
There doesn't seem to be too many of these floating around. I am glad you found a set and hope they bring you years of audio enjoyment. I stumbled upon mine locally also.
Thanks Guys, I got them home this evening, appear to be early 604, serial #'s are below 1000 as in 00750 or there abouts (I'll double check those when re-installing the crossovers). I removed the drivers to move them. My friend helped me wrestle them into my living room and I reassembled them. Got them hooked up to a Marantz 8B then switched to Quad II mono blocks, and realized i hooked the LF drivers out of phase. Got that sorted out then started to play with the HF control on the crossovers, very noise, one is so dirty that its as tho the curcuit is open. I've removed the crossovers and sent them home with my Tech, who also happened to be the fellow helping me move them. So no real news on how they sound, back to my Tannoy Golds for now,may have these up and running by the weekend I hope.
Here is a photo of the Altecs - Xovers removed.

Great looking pair of Altecs John. I look forward to your impression once you get them setup and dialed in.
