The point of the deleted post was that given the proliferation of scams involving fraudulent methods of payment (such as "overpaying" with a large money order or check that is actually a forged instrument, and then getting the seller/victim to become an unwitting accomplice in the crime by having him cash the forged instrument and send part or all of the excess payment along with the goods), bidding an auction way up over the full retail price may become a more common occurance. Since the scammer is not going to pay with real money, but rather is hoping to get the seller to become an unwitting accomplice in perpetrating a forgery, the price paid at the auction becomes irrelevant. (Which is not to suggest that every overbid auction is won by a scammer.)
The post's style was in imitation of one of the most infamous of the Nigerian 419 scam letters, ostensibly written by "Miriam Abacha" or some similar name, the widow of the late Nigerian dictator, etc.
To me, it was obviously just a spoof, but anyway . . .
Follow Ups:
If someone is an out-and-out liar and does not mind selling his soul for 30 pieces of silver, modern communications technology makes scamming people an easy way to "earn" a good living. Here in Japan the various Nigerian scams are not so bad a problem due to the language barrier, but Japan has its own equally unbelievably stupid scams that people keep falling for. There is a sense in which the scams are not stupid -- they are well contrived, and based on a keen understanding of human psychology -- but one would think that with the HUGE amount of publicity devoted to alerting people to these scams that the scams would just disappear for lack of fish that bite . . . yet there are indeed people that keep biting regardless of how much publicity the problem is given. You don't want to blame the victim, but the stupidity of people -- including some very smart and successful people -- is truly amazing.
Now if we could just find out who those people are and get them interested in hi-fi audio . . .
just go on over to the isolation ward and type in machina dynamica teleportation tweak..
good god..

There are a couple of rants about that one in Whiner's too.
