I've recently purchased Paramount 300B SET's from Bottlehead and have been looking at what DIY speaker to build. Of course I'm interested in high efficiency but must admit that cost and ease of cabinet assembly are important. The TQWT look simple enough to construct but I'm having trouble deciding which driver to use. I've considered Fostex 166E, 208Sigma and 207E. Is the TQWT a good match for an SET amp? Those of you using a TQWT design, what driver are you using? Your experience and suggestions are much appreciated.

Hi,
You can also try the BD-Design Singular. Lots of bass, no peaks or dips, all straight cuts so easy to assemble.

Hello IvoT,
Thanks for the link. I've looked at this design before and didn't consider it much at first. It seems the longer I look the more often I change my direction. It appears to be a bit more involved of a cabinet build than I'm willing to undertake for my first venture. Of course this doesn't mean I won't change directions on that ten minutes from now. Anyway, thanks for the help and have a great 4th!

Since you mention ease of assembly you might be interested in the Madisound/Fostex BK-16. You can build these in a weekend without much more than glue, sandpaper, and a few clamps. Finishing can be simple to elaborate, depending on your taste.
The cabinet parts are dirt cheap and would be a good experimental base for different drivers with some sort of removable front baffle plate that would allow you to swap drivers until you found one you liked
I think they sound pretty good as designed. I'm using the FF-165K and driving them with a pair of 300B SET amps and am very happy with their coherence and immediacy. They do not produce the lowest LF extension but they're not bad either and what is there is clean. IMO they need a supertweeter but you can try without first and add one later quite easily
BK16 looked pretty solid on a SIM (corner space shown)
do they get a bit "hollow" on some material below cutoff?
Maybe so, though I have noticed that (like all speakers) placement is so important. In my former listening room they were about 2.5' from side and back walls and produced satisfying bass within their limits. In my new environment they are currently set up much further from the corners and I'm not as happy. Obviously then they need some corner reinforcement

I thought so.
Forgot to mention the BIB, there are designs for the drivers you mentioned.

The BIB design by Terry Cain is looking very good. Thanks for posting the link. I think I'm going to give these a try. I wonder how easy mathcad (Martin King)will be to learn? Well, best get started. Thanks.
Onur has two cabinet designs (both t-lines) for the fe166e.

Might take a look at these. Very good bass response but may need a super-tweeter depending on your tastes. Easy too since the plans eliminate the engineering and materials calculations.

In a Voigt pipe you need a driver with a fairly high Qts in order to get enough bass output out the port. Also, since you're using 300B's you need enough efficiency for that. I would not go with a Qts less than 0.3 and a sensitivity less than 93 dB/1W/1m.
From the list of Fostex drivers, I would try the 167E (adds a shield which by side effect offers a better Qts of 0.31 instead of 0.21).
I have a pair of discontinued Fostex drivers in a Voigt pipe that was around this 0.3 number and the bass output suffers a little compared to a cheap Radio Shack full ranger that had a much higher Qts (how much were they I forgot, something like 0.45 for the RS driver). So I wouldn't want it any lower.
But remember, this is a small light speaker and will not produce a lot of bass, and none of those will in a Voigt pipe. But it's probably the best you can do and it's not expensive to try.

I built the old lowther club voigt one and tried a lot of drivers.Beta 8 had the best bass slam. But the voigt was a peaky thing.Running through a signal gen there was like a frequency where it peaked and it seemed to almost totally unload the driver causing my beta 8 to scratch.Perhaps it was just a peak though .Colored too.I all so tried fostec 206e (Think paper buz saw carving away mercilessly at your bleeding ears). Those 2 drivers are definetly for sale haha :\ no more fostec for me just incase.
