That's essentially what they were made for (in an old open-backed console application).

my sister in-law just retrieved from her thrift shop a pair of japanese made speakers that run four maybe 5" drivers, one in each corner of a cabinet maybe 2' high by 18" across - in the middle of the four drivers is a 1" tweeter - there is also a 2.0 capacitor in place - the back of the cabinet is only enclosed by grillcloth. i can see no name on the drivers but the back of the cabinet says 'voice codxial' any idea what these are? and do you think a larger open baffle would be a better application for these? i have been foolin' are with these on a marantz 2218 and i am sure tubes will sound better and i may try the fisher 500c later - any help would be appreciated. thanks much.
Sounds like a Coral.
though I don't know what brand it is, I can say the cabs are prolly optimized for the four 5"(?) drivers. The tweeter in the middle, with a 2.0 (ufd?) capacitor would be crossed over at around 10khz (assuming the tweeter is 8 ohms). That configuration should make for a good point source - the woofers spread apart on a wide baffle and tweeter twixt all four drivers, should appear like a rather large single driver (in theory). I don't know that I'd change a thing unless you wanted to experiment with better drivers; you at least have good cabs (yes?).
the cabinets are cheaply made with diamond shapes in between all the drivers. how about a larger baffle with routed out area the size of this box minus the side pieces. i could place these already wired drivers into the routed area and maybe they would benefit from the larger open baffle? if so, how large a baffle? thanks,
