Hi everyone.Well I am gutted .Took delivery of a "mint pair" off ebay today. After having read about the the bad caps in the crossovers.I checked these out strait away. One Driver looked like it had been damp and the surround is really lose and the other looks like the suround is really stiff so basiclly the compliance of the 2 drivers is radically different.Further investagation of the tweeter revealed that perhaps actually the coil is still intact.I have discovered this problem with old foster horn tweeters.Where the minute aluminium tabs comming of the voice coils corode and break here.I believe the flux in the solder eats the aluminium.Come to think of it .I have had this problem with JBL 375's as well.Catch is I have to dig back into the diaphram and try to solder a lead out wire onto the aluminium.
Anyway very discouraging.I have been trying to get my hands on a pair of good corals ever since I picked up one coral beta 8 many years ago.
What is this post all about? I dont know .Vintage drivers can break your heart.Vintage drivers with aluminium voice coils seem to be a problem for me. Does anyone have one of these they want to sell? or even a tweeter. Thanks for looking anyway.I am off to leave this guy top feedback in the hope that he leaves me good feedback in return having neglected to do so untill he sees mine no doubt.Aint it great .This dont sit well with me doing so.My father loved HIFI loved buying and selling and collecting it.Never did a bad deal always was honest and open.If someone ripped him off.He wouldnt winge about it.I would say dad your a sucker why do take this .He would repley as always something to this effect .Son its only money I wont deal with him again dealing like that is his loss.I never really understood but now I think I do.His reputation was more important to him then money.Strange enough after all these years it's sort of rubbed off on me I guess.I never ceases to amase me what ppl will do for money. If ppl say somthing is good I stupidly believe them.I get caught preety often and my g/f says blah blah in my ears.Sounds so familiar now.Its only 168$ I paid for them. But now I have to go lie in a feedback colum to keep my reputation for being a honest ebayer in tact.I dont know what I will do.
This is wrong where did the world go wrong? I used to winge "they dont make anything like they used too everthing is crap these days nothing lasts" But now I realise these PPL are all of us.They dont make anything to last anymore because "we dont want to pay for it" We are losing respect for ourselves each other and everything we want to posess. We want everything now we dont care what .We just dont care its all about ourselves taking and not giving and soon there will be nothing good.all the old stuff will be gone .No more to find nothing left.No comunity no love no respect............

On a more postive note after listing to gilian welch on the country music channel. I have been in the habit of painting armorall on spiders of vinatge drivers to losen them up.But I never have used it on a fabric surround. One of these corals is really stiff and doesnt move very much. Comparing to a beta 8 anyway. It doesnt scratch though. The loser driver has mold growing through the fabric surround .Looks like it has been damp for some time. The cone looks unaffected though. Is amorall the way to go on the surround and spider or is there a better way?
Hi.
I have just replaced the surrounds on my Coral Beta 8 and Coral 8F60 drivers.
On the Betaīs it moved the Fs from 80-90hz back down to 40hz, and the Qt from 0.5-0.6 back down to 0.2-0.3
It looks like your drivers might use a similar frame to the Betaīs, then you can use the 8" boston surounds from wooferrepair.
I used Cervin Vega 8" surrounds for the 8F60 drivers.
But the spiders are very stiff on the 8F60, what is this armorall you are talking about ?
Are good idea. This is so werid I was having werid foam thoughts last night but not about these. They are the same as beta 8 for sure. The spider is stiffer then the other driver too though.I might go the amorall on it tonite.Amoral... not sure if it sold in the usa.I just found a site below but I cant find the actual product. It is amoral protectant. It is used on rubber vinal leather plastics etc.It is sold to put on dashes and trims bumpers etc It will make old plastics softer. There is a catch. If for eg you apply it to a old dash and stop doing so regulary. It will make it crack.I have used this to losen up spiders on my axiom 301's and it seemed to work. And so far no damage.though I worry about it.
The only issue I have with foam would be the fact I live in a high humidity enviroment. But if foam sounds better it would be worth it.Last night I was wondering if you could cut out old paper surounds and use foam on vintage drivers.I have lots of nos pairs of calrad 8 inch I could experment with. When I listen to these they seem to get confused on complex stuff like possible there is all sorts of break up modes happening that I thought may improve with foam surrounds.Thank you for the tip.I will investage further.I quiet enjoy working on drivers.
You can use the same glue that comes with the surrounds to coat them when they are installed.
Just mix half water and half glue and coat the front and back of the surround. This should protect them from sun and humidity.
I have not done this myself yet, but will do it on the 8F60 drivers.
On the 8F60 drivers, one had a very stiff spider, and that driver had a weird freq. response, Lots of midrange and falling highs.
When I massaged the spider and made it softer, it flattened out the response a lot, and improved the highs.
Iīm pretty sure you can get great results from changing the surrounds.
Just today I found a shop(www.speakerbits.com) who sells spiders. and will be getting some new soft ones for the 8F60īs.
It was a bit frightening to cut into the drivers at first, especially the Betaīs, but when I heard the improvement I ordered another set of surrounds for the other pair at ones.
I really didnīt think it was possible to change the surrounds, without getting into all sorts of trouble with the voicecoil allignment, but it is very easy and great fun too :-)
And remember that Lowther always have used foam surround for their drivers, that must mean they do something right ;-)
