PWK liked cheap parts. And he could make them sound pretty good sometimes.
Funny, you never see guys at the Altec and JBL forums talking about modding their speakers with Atlas bullhorn drivers and flame-thrower Klipsch mid horns. But there's a regular little cottage industry around "improving" Klipsch products.
The guys that kill me are the guys who replace the mids and highs in their Cornwalls with Altec but still leave that cheesey K-33 woofer in place. They'd probably be better off to replace the K-33 with a 416 and leave the stock Klipsch mids and highs. Better yet ditch the whole goddam schmear and get a proper turnkey Altec in the first place.

You hit the nail on the head, even if in your characteristic fashion you damned him with faint praise.
Those that think they can make the khorn sound better are only making it sound different .
And you wouldn't call the squawker a flame thrower if you heard it with some proper amplification. None of that SS crap that you call an amplifier for me.

Back in 1969 when I was in the market for a pair of speakers I was really interested in the K's as they were heavily praised and advertised in I belive it was Popular Electronics (or its predecessor). I found a dealer with a pair on the floor and they blew me away. But my brother was looking at the Altec Valencia so I went with him to give them a listen and it was then that I realized that the K's didn't blow me away ... they were just better than most other speakers and the heavy press they received had me pre-disposed to giving them a favorable rating (don't get me wrong they were better than most of the field) but after hearing the Valencias I didn't need another A-B listening check. My brother and I walked out of the dealer's showroom with 2 pair of Altecs which we both still have and enjoy although I now have a pair of VOT's as well. Over the years I've had friend who in the persuit of "High End" have spend thousands of dollars on all the latest new High End fads and have even had my horns ridiculed as outdated technology but through it all they all have to admit the Altecs are pretty damn good. For what it's worth in 1969 tubes were the most affordable and common form of amplification and my Altecs started on tubes and are now on VFET SS amps. Anyway, like I said, the K's sound pretty good and are better than most of the rest but Altecs just seem to sound better to me with less strain.

C'mon LT, that's the oldest and lamest excuse around for a bum speaker, "you're not using the right amp". I have used Klipsch speakers with tubes by the way. Right now I've four horn systems running---two powered by tubes, one powered by conventional SS and one bi-amped with a tri-path on the treble and a big-hog QSC on the woofers. The Klipsch midrange horn is a flamethrower because of it's restricted throat and narrow dispersion. The use of tube amps neither opens the throat nor widens the pattern. But if you like it it's aces with me, nothing is perfect, pick your poison as they say.
I know your opinions on SS and tubes, I felt like tweaking you a bit.
For me, as you say, it works. I feel sorry for those who have not found the right combination. Perhaps they are the ones doomed to endless experimentation and tweaking, hoping to discover something inescapable to them.

OK LT, all the crap I hand out I deserve some back.
