I have 4 pairs of old Frazier Dixielander speakers, essentially an 8 inch paper cone driver in a folded horn box, crossing over to a top mounted wooden horn with a compression driver.
The Compression driver has a clear Plexiglas or clear plastic disc on the back of the driver held on by a center mounted screw.
Underneath this screw, are two screw terminals with the drivers power wires.
These wires go to terminals on the back of the speakers, connecting to the crossover.
The crossover for this driver are two parallelled caps of 12uf, and 100 volts, making for 24 uf total.
I called Frazier, and talked to te owner,'
He told me this driver is an Atlas 333, and said it has the standard .707 throat.
He said I will never find a diaphragm for these, and suggested I try a newer driver like a Selenium, etc.
Since the crossover is a simple first order at around 800 hz, I need a driver that goes down a bit.
The horn is a simple exponential wooden horn.
Any thoughts or advice ?
The crossover does have a big variable resistor in it, so I can match efficiency somewhat.
Follow Ups:
I may be the only one on here who likes these, but the Peavey RX 22 has a screw-on 1" throat, is rated to cross over at 500 Hz, and is not terrribly expensive. The older Peavey 22A (aluminum) and 22XT+ (titanium) drivers sound decent to me too. All the diaphragms on these are interchangeable, so if you pick up some on ebay or something, it's easy to get new XT+ diaphragms, or swap in the older aluminum ones.
Some Dixielanders used Altec 802-806 drivers and those are well known to respond well down to 800hz and are readily available to boot.
The stock Frazier - Atlas SA 333 Compression Drivers is a screw on type, not a bolt on like the Aztecs.
Since My Gollehon Wooden Horns are also screw on driver mountiing, I would like to stick to this type of driver
Hello Tom!
Enjoying your retirement I see ?
These are not Altec Drivers.
I just took em apart, and these have an orange brownish colored diaphragm made out of some papery feeling plastic.
I wonder what these were, if indeed they were Atlas drivers ?
The folded horn bass box, and the 8 inch driver combo I really like.
Lively and efficient, and good sounding too.
I am glad I save my Gollehon wooden horns as Freddie suggested.
I checked, and these drivers screw right on.
People who want to play with horns, and in need of an efficient, small, fairly good sounding bass box should find these little guys.
The 8 inch driver will go right up to 1 k no problem, and sound pretty good at it too.
What I need is a cheap, decent sounding 1 inch driver of 8 ohms that will go down to 500 hx, and out as far as possible.
The Milleniums I looked at don't go down far enough.
The ones that do go way down, and out far up in freq cost megabucks.
I have heard mixed things about the Altec 806.
Any other suggestions ?
I would like to keep it a 2 way ?
Cut higher, 800-900 hz your 8 incher should have no problem. I am trying a Beyma unit now, it beats the Altec 806 so bad, its not even funny.
Why do you want to run a 1" threaded compression driver down to 500Hz ?
