Do they cover the full freq range?
Anything reasonably priced, assembled or DIY?
Unfortunately most of these conclusions are made by people who have not heard, or heard 1 set to make their conclusions.
Romy: try out one good set of field coils ..... may change your mind from your baseless arguement. I don't say FCs are the best .... of the few that are available .... most seem to be outstanding for what they can do. Compared to the thousands of permanent mags out there .... which itself makes a difference. The magic is not %22i'm there%22 or %22 the're here%22 .... but I'm in the musician's shoes ....
Don't be a cat trying to get its nails on anything that moves .... instead be the one which cuddles down by the warm lush music.
Like other's have said, they simply used an electromagnet rather than a permanent magnet to generate the field. They went out of vogue when Alnico came along. In most of the sets I had they were also the choke in the power supply. Guess I'm getting old...
Rick
There is nothing reasonable priced in field coil speakers variety on the market. There are some antique speakers from 20's and 30's which sometimes sell for serious money on E-bay , like those Field coil RCA's from radio consoles fetching $600 a pair. Well RD ,Steve its all your fault;)Since you're from Bulgaria , Germany would be the best place to buy some older speakers. A couple years ago I was listening to probably most advanced Field Coils in existence
from Cogent. The drivers looked anything like that antique toys but I did not like the sound that much. Shows are hard and I guess I (and I think many others)expected too much.Regards
Most drivers use a magnet to provide the magnetic flux to the
voice coil. In a fiel coild driver, they wind a magnet wire and
pass dc current in it creating a magnetic flux that will saturate
the voice coil. Compare to a regular magnet, the field coil magnetic
flux will be stronger and more stable. Combine a field coil with
a light but siff cone and a supple surround and you get a formula 1;
A sound that is very fast, dynamic, full of details, clear (low
distortion) and very lively. Well implemented in front loaded horn
or open-baffle, they can be amazing.
They're the forgotten legacy of the past, that we're starting
to discover again.
isn't the idea of a 'forum' that there are diverging opinions?
to be truthful, there IS a load of hype and snake oil out there, and frankly, theres a whole lot of suckers willing to buy into 'the BEST sounding thing thats NEWLY discovered'. surely that's no surprise to anyone. 'audiophilia' is a game of disposable income, and theres a lot of people willing to dump their money in some huckster's pocket. whether that be some obscurist 'ancient technology type's'wallet or some large-name, overpriced proprietary damping material speaker corporation's.
besides-- there's LOADS of horrible implementations of GREAT drivers. to say 'buyer beware' of some old-new technology ISN'T crapping in anybody's sandbox, for god's sake- it's prudent advice- don't get suckered into the newest fad, which may be done in a year, and audiogon'll be full of 'em.
listen for yourself-- maybe you heard a great implementation and it can be done really well. maybe you've never heard a great implementation of them. maybe they're the magic bullet to audio nirvana. only one way to tell, and that's listen. obviously, romy didn't find the hype up to the reality. nuf said.
d
Exactly.
Makes anything romy pronounces .... with his usual grace and elan. Superfluous. Just like Romy.
No one is rushing out or jumping on the electrodynamic bandwagon. There is simply renewed interest.
Romy is a drive by tagger, and virtual grafitti bandit. He has the manners of a pig. He smells. No matter what he has to say about hifi (for those that care).
He long ago ceased to be cute or amusing. Like last millenium.
c'mon elmo-
none of the things said were inflammatory to anyone- just clarifying possible overestimations of a driver's capabilities. there wasn't any name calling (besides for saying audio asylum was prone to hype-- which at times it is).
there HAVE to be pundits to keep the marketeers in check and make sure all the 'marvelous', and frankly, impossible, things they advertise are for real. that's nothing to get angry about.. in fact, i'd think it'd be something to welcome-- even if it is based on one person's experience-- and i'm not the one to judge that.
just take one person's view with a grain of salt-- even mine. but don't discard valid points of view based on the personality of the person giving it. if antisocial behavior limited whose opinion you took seriously, you'd spend very little time talking to audio types anyhow!
d.
His deleted messages from just last week say different. When he was walking around smilingly with fly unzipped, and his dingle dangling.
"pundits to keep the marketeers in check"
Romy as saviour? There isn't a platform or thread Romy's pathological need for attention hasn't darkened. The entire web. He sucks the oxygen out of every virtual room he enters. Nothing to say, nothing to add. Only belligerence, confrontation, coupled with an ego that makes G*d's cigar teary.
"don't discard valid points of view based on the personality"
If you feel I'm being shortchanged by not reading his dreck, fine. To me he is a complete waste of time, and countless site administrator's bandwidth. He does after all, have his OWN website (full of his usual marvelous pronouncements, insights, and gems).
"if antisocial behavior limited whose opinion you took seriously, you'd spend very little time talking to audio types anyhow"
I'm not a clinical psychologist, I don't get paid for being in the same room with him (let alone building). His raft of pathologies are his. For him to proudly enjoy, in all their glory and splendor. He has a lil' stiffie right now, just from the attention of this very thread.
Romy in possession of some musically beneficial knowledge (to me and my system)? YOU have the com .... I'm all ears.
You won`t get something reasonably priced from current production, but there are always vintage drivers on german Ebay. Those of the more wellknown brands are expensive, too, but there are also others.
Do a search on field coils ... plenty of info in AA.
