I have been listening to Velocifero on and off for the past week or so and am somehow left a little underwhelmed. The typical Ladytron ingredients are there: it seems a nice melding of Witching Hour and Light & Magic... perhaps I have come to expect something a little more progressive - or at least evolutionary - from these guys an' girls. Yes, they have evolved their sound a little; denser and more layered production, slower and meatier beats... tho the lyrics are a let down at times. Hmmm, an attractive, once creative performer going thru the motions?Caveat: I have not heard it on a direct-presenting system, for which this album may be voiced, so?.. I look forward to getting Velocifero on my DAP and listening thru my ESW6 'phones, which even made 'Third' appealing and involving earlier today!
Perhaps I had set my expectations unrealistically high. I am listening to it as I type and I am liking it more... have I become an overly critical listener (person)?
Will report back in a week or so.
Cheers

Okay, this thread never got going and is somewhat a long-time stale; I did give a commitment to post a follow-up tho...
I like this album now - there are many layers to the tracks on this album, each of what brings something significant to the music. I think I was missing much of what the album had to offer when listening through certain systems I had at my disposal. Sounds like audiophile toss-manship, tho I often find with a lot of densely produced music with electronic effects that a system with a direct, balanced, resolved, yet un-etched presentation to be helpful to enjoyment...
I digress. The album is constructed from dense – and often dark – layers with an attempted sense of drive or propulsion, which is diluted by what I take to be acoustic compression (dynamics and temporal subtleties are lost; emotional connection is lessened). To me this album is a melding of Witching Hour and Light and Magic, and then just a little bit more yet a little less. I am really looking forward to seeing them in October at the Tivoli (a fairly small converted theatre).
Cheers
