(Yikes, I need to dust.)
This post is all about the Rod Rain, which is a clone of the Rupert Neve headphone amplifier.
I bought mine for about $120 from AliExpress, if I'm not mistaken. Supposedly. the Rod Rain is 98% equivalent to the Neve, which itself sounds comparable to models in the $1000 range.
I'm monitoring the sound as it breaks in. At 13 hours in it was intolerable, boom and sizzle and veiled. Now nearly 30 hours in. it's coming in to its own. I expect at 200 hours it should be sublime.
Pictured is the Musetec 005 DAC in silver on the bottom. The blue lit box is the Rod Rain. The red light is on the Raspberry Pi 4. And to the right is the Sennheiser 800 headphones.
Follow Ups:
My gear relies on Western components dating to the '40s and '50s. That's almost 80 years, and the sound is absolutely pristine and transparent. The Chinese stuff being sold today will be in a landfill in a fraction of that time.
It uses almost all the same parts as the Neve, which is American.
Otherwise I think you're painting with too broad a brush. Surely there is some Chinese gear that would meet with your spproval.
Despite sounding bad. Just be aware that every single component in that will be counterfeit and/or typical chinese toy level electronic dreck. The cost of these things cannot be offset by slave labor savings, the real parts alone of a Neve will be well above your purchase price. Ask yourself how they can sell it so cheap when it is half of the authentic parts cost, hmmmm...
