There's no question my new STAX headphones are the best sounding headphones I've ever heard. However, I still prefer speakers to headphones. I bought a pair of Mini Maggie speakers a few months ago and they really sound good. I'm sold on STAX headphones and I'm sold on Magnepan dipole speakers.
Happy listening!

I also prefer listening to speakers over headphones. Current setup has ATC SCM 40 V2 with SVS PC 4000 sub, which is very musical.
There are some recordings where a excellent headphone setup can be extremely enjoyable. I've been using a headphone setup with Chord TT DAC/Headphone setup with Ultrasone Edition 15 Veritas cans. Great tonal balance and clarity with this setup. My issue with headphone setups have been too many require EQ to sound right. It's not easy to get the EQ right without adversely impacting the overall sound adversely. The Chord/Ultrasone setup doesn't need EQ to sound right.
Although I have always loved Stax cans, the Stax amps don't drive the cans optimally. To get the most out of the Stax cans, headphone amps such as the KGSSHV Carbon or Blue Hawaii is needed. Theat costs $$$.

There's always better headphones and/or a better headphone amp. However, I'm quite pleased with my new STAX system. I don't think it needs a different tonal balance or any bass boost. It sounds perfect to me. Perhaps it was designed for my particular ears. ;-)
Anyway, I'm not prepared to spend anymore money on headphones. I'm perfectly satisfied with the sound of my new STAX system. If I spend more money, it will be for larger Magnepan speakers. However, I probably don't even need to do that. I'm very happy with my Mini Maggie speakers set up in an ultra near-field listening configuration. Imaging is holographic and tonal balance sounds just fine to me.
I'm 75 years old and I think this might be my final system. All I want to do now is listen to music.
Such is life!
