Mostly for use on a flight to Australia, and the odd flight elsewhere and some home use. I know neither offer noise cancelling, but I am not sure that feature is worth the trade-off.
I have no local dealer able to demonstrate both these models, so I will go for the shot in the dark. I am after comfort, a neutral sound, above average sound-stage/separation, and something which covers my fairly petite ears. Lots of bass isn't important.
I will not be using them with a headphone amp, just an HTC 816 cell phone, and a Rega off-board headphone stage which gets it's power from the speaker outputs of my Naim Nait XS integrated.

My portable units are the Beyer 1350DTs. Light, solid and great sound, very neutral, sounds good with everything I play (jazz, rock). Good isolation, though not as good as some over the ear models. But the lightness, small size and sound more than make up for any small penalty in outside noise intrusion IMHO. I don't travel without them.
Check out the Inner Fidelity review if you have a chance. If buying, look at Amazon, got mine on sale for under $200.

I would never consider buying another pair of the ATH-M series. Mine were closed-in and lifeless, not at all what I want when listening to phones. I use open-backs now, but I'm sure there are better choices in the closed-back style.
