I have a Cardas headphone cable on my HD600 cans. It's a major sonic
upgrade over the stock cable. I am wondering, though: does Cardas make
its own wire, or buy it from some other company?
Follow Ups:
I'm pretty sure Cardas doesn't mine their own copper, but they surely do a pretty decent job of assembling various raw materials...Also, their warranty/repair service is second to none IME:
The Cardas cable for my HD600s developed a intermittent noise problem (solder joint). Even thought the cable was several years old, Cardas replaced the cable for free. The only expense I incurred was for shipping the cable to them, they paid for return shipping. Cardas does not recommend having your Cardas cable repaired by anyone else but Cardas factory techs, mostly because of the special construction/repair methods they employ.
Cardas will fix or replace defective cables during the original owner's lifetime of use, AFAIK.

with my 18 foot Cardas for my HD600 cans. Sounds decidedly better than the stock cable.
My Grado RS-1is have also been recabled with 20 feet of Cardas. The modder took a great risk in trying this procedure (although the final results turned out stellar!). I would not recommend trying this mod at home, unless you are an experienced craftsperson and electronics assembler. The wooden cups of the expensive RS-1 must be taken apart and reassembled very slowly and carefully for this mod. Therefore, I won't attempt to describe exactly how it needs to be done.
The sonic differences between mine and a stock pair are subtle. A bit smoother, more refined, slightly more air and space, cleaner bass.
The Cardas cable and matching plug are of much higher build quality than stock. No comparison at all there! A worthy upgrade.
