But that was 35 years ago.

They might still be pretty awesome - especially if you can get them for less than the $200 they sold for back in the 1970's.
I have some experiece with them (*HP1/YH1)The ceramic magnets which are the "bread" of the moving magnetic assembly (diaphram/"meat") will weaken over time, making these phones horrible inefficient. (Magnets becoming demagnitized) To re-entergize the magnets, you need to run around 3W (3 watts!) through them for 24 hours. Pink or white noise is fine. No worries, they have a TEN WATT power rating! After 24 hours, if you had experienced "weak and in-efficient" HP1/YH1 phones, they will be back to close to full power again.
As far fetched as this sounds, I have done this to more than 10 sets and it always works.
*Erroneous story alert....
This was told to me by my dealer back in the 70's. I bought a new set of HP1's and was so "in love with them" that I went back to get another set a year later. The dealer told me that their are no more HP1's because "Hewlett-Packard" had things to say about the letters HP being used as the model number! (HP= HEAD PHONES (duh) So Yamaha chose to begin calling the same units YH for "Yamaha Headphones" and supposed to have satisfied the legal department of HP. Same for the HP1,2,3 called later YH1,2,3.
This could all be horsesh!t as well but it was a tale I remembered. Reserving my responsability for it being false if it is--

I would imagine that 3 watts would sound a hell of a lot louder near the end of the 24 hour cycle than it did at the beginning?
I have not measured it but if I had to wager a guess, "several dB" and very much so with the difference.
