By this I mean relatively smooth 'flat' frequency response with a slow decline towards the top end, but certainly not BASS!!!!!!!! heavy. For a classical listener.In-ear type preferred.
TIA!

Zero Audio Tenore's are getting a lot of attention on Headfi and are very affordable. Some have compared them to much more expensive iem's.
I have not tried them yet.
I would not hesitate to recommend Etymotic. The MC5 (no mic) runs about $60 USD. Of particular note, if you desire good isolation, is the -35 dB to -42 dB attenuation of outside sounds. A bit lean in the bass, but laser-like precision in locking in the pitch.
Of course sound isolation is not so great if you plan to use them walking about around traffic!

IEMs...
Perhaps a tad shy of the top Shures, and not quite as detailed as the 4-driver Westones but a lot less expensive than either, and it has a pleasant cohesiveness to the presentation which I like. At that general price range (plus or minus 50%), I could not find a closed can or IEM (I needed to avoid too much leakage) which was as good. Going to 3x-4x the price, I could find better.
I find it does remarkably well on classical, piano, and the 'delicate' passages, and has seriously great depth/detail in orchestral passages.
Works with my iPhone4. Works better with my ADL X1 DAC driven with a digital output from the iPhone.
I like the Woodees Classic
I've been using these for several years now, and have given them as gifts to all the young people in my life. THey're durable, cheap, and sound darn good.
Happy listening,
Jim
