I am a vinyl junkie and like to play vinyl through my main amp/floor standing speakers. However, I also would like to have the ability to play through my headphone amp without having to disconnect/reconnect the interconnects. I use an Audio Research SP9 MK II pre-amp and a Mapletree tube headphone amp. The pre-amp only has one set of main outputs. It does have tape outputs though. I have tried the tape outputs, however the gain is not very much. Any help would be appreciated.Reagan

Hi,I have used these with my LS-15 preamp,(Which also has only 1 set of rca outputs), with very good results.
A pair will set you back about $15http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103638
Good luck,

I would have thought that using the Tape Out signal would be exactly right.
The stereophile review (from years back) says, "there is no active circuitry or buffering between the line-level inputs and the tape-out jacks". If correct, that seems to say that going from your phono preamp to Headphone amp should be the same as taking the signal from Tape Out to your headphone amp. But this doesn't seem the case in your experience.
But I do note this line, from the same review: " The SP9 Mk.II has addressed this situation by reducing the gain of the CD input by 12dB."
Are you perhaps piping your phono preamp into the CD input?
Hmm. No. The phono plays fine through the main speakers and it is connected to the phono. The manual does sy for the recorder outputs "level is non-variable and approximatly the same as the selected input source". I would think that this would work since my tube headphone amp is designed to take input directly from a cdp. Thanks for the input. I'll try it again and maybe swap out tubes.

Hmm, not at all sure what's going on.
Given that this is AR we're talking about, I recommend sending them an email or giving them a call. I bet they can help.
