Greetings Inmates,
I normally hang out in the vinyl forum but need some headphone advice. I'm just about to pull the trigger on a pair of Audeze LCD-2s from a local dealer. I've spent months reading up on these cans in various other forums, but since I'm a fellow inmate, I would ask this forum if these are worth the price.
I currently have Grado 325s, Beyer DT880s and Denon AHD-2000s. Source/driver components include VPI/Benz, Denon 3900, LavryDA10, and my beloved Antique Sound Labs head-amp. Having no more upgrade path for speakers due to spatial/spousal constraints, I'm ready to kick it up a huge notch to the LCD-2s.
Musical genres include mostly classical, classic rock, electronic, and DUB.
Anyone using these headphones?
Follow Ups:
I started my headphone journey with HD580's and the "Little" Headroom amp, then onto the K701's and a PS Audio GCHA. I just picked up a used pair Rev 2 on ebay and I have had them for about one week. I love them! The high's might not sparkle like the 701's but they sound more natural or organic if you will.
The GCHA lack's bass weight, especially with the 701's but as soon as I plugged in the LCD-2's I gained that weight back. Can't say enough about the Audeze's, love everything about them (except the weight).
I am currently researching for a good <$1000 tube amp (Lyr?) so stay tuned.
I used a pair of Sennheiser 580s for about 12 years before making a jump on upgrading headphones. Tried a pair of HE-500's driven by a Headroom Desktop amp, and wasn't too impressed. For me, the gains were not enough over the Sennheisers to justify the price.
Out of random trial and error, I bought the LCD-2s and was blown away. It was love on first hearing... voices came out of a silent background and sounded ridiculously realistic, detailed and smooth. This is the LCD-2 rev 2s, bought right before the bamboo rev3 came out.
Seeing others' responses, I guess it shows how different each's preferences are. The headphones are not light, but I also would say they're very comfortable and I wear them for hours at a time without complaint. They are also very sturdy and do not show any signs of wear and tear. And in my set-up, I actually think they are not dark at all... they are pretty even from top to bottom, and may have a slightly accentuated midrange. I'd actually prefer a bit more bottoom oomph, who knows, maybe it's my amp?
I highly, highly recommend it.
Love mine...beat the crap out of some Beyer T1's
There are measurements on innerfidelity, goldenears, and by purrin at changstar. (simple google search should get you there).
They are often available at under $700 on amazon including amplifier. Bulletproof lifetime warranty.
I bought them several months ago, and they are a very easy recommendation. I have listened to the LCD 2 as well, but I do not have them on hand to compare.
I did have some high pitched noise when I first used them, but that went away after leaving them on for a while and I haven't heard it since.
A great foray into electrostatics, without the expenditure and risk of getting Stax.
I 'own' a pair of acoustat 2+2s that I'm 'storing' at a buddy's house. I have no room for them in my current digs, but I long for that sound. One other sound that I miss came from my old Apogee ribbons I sold long ago. I guess that is why I'm interested in the Audeze's. I'm going to audition them tomorrow and I'll report back.
Thanks for the help team!
I have a pair of Rev. 1 & agree with others above, it is a dark sounding HP (have AKG 701 & Sennheiser HD 650). This was really brought home to me when hearing acoustic string instruments (guitar, violin, mandolin) which sounded tonally low, unlike my 701 & 650.
Weight is also an issue as stated above, as well as it not being very comfortable to wear. I made the mistake in believing in the hype & would definitely council against purchase without hearing them.
So far, it doesn't seem like a good idea going for these headphones. Head-fi had some great reviews and some other locales. I love my Beyer DT880s but the T1s seem just too far out of reach. Too bad they don't make the Denon 7000s anymore. I'll try to sneak down to the local vendor for a good listening session this week. I have a stack o' CDs for the ready.
Have only used them at meet-ups, but they struck me as quite heavy. I couldn't see using them for long listening sessions for that reason.
I love my HE-5LEs, which are excellent with an amp of sufficient power.
Also, The Cable Company has a headphone lending library if you want to try out any headphones that you can't find locally.
Too many manuf defects and no air . Great bass but the HD800 is much better as is the Beyer T1 IMO. However the LCD 2.2 is better constructed. has bamboo wood and better cable and headband.

As a happy 325is and DT880 600 owner, I found the LCD-2, v.1 to be way too dark for me. Sold 'em, cost me 200 bucks just to find out I didn't like them. I've never heard the v.2 but I'm thinking how different could it be? I've read where it's also dark. Sure would be nice if you could hear before you buy. Given what you own, I'd be vewy, vewy caweful.

I heard a pair of LCD2s at the Santa Monica headphone meet earlier this year. The audition was difficult since it was so dang noisy. My plan is to bring my DA10 and some source material with me to audition at the local retailer before I buy.
Question about 'the darkness.' Was it a lack of high frequency? Too much bass/midbass?
Yeah, meets are more often gab fests although at least you get some idea of the equipment.
I would call the LCD-2 "rolled" on the top end. No sparkle at all. I got flamed for that over at head-fi but so be it. Best thing about them is the sub-bass, really stygian. Other than that, it was not a can for me. You might want to take one of your other cans just to make sure what the differences are. Good luck.
BTW, the only other planar magnetic I've had decent experience with is the HiFiMan HE-5LE. Better but still not enough sparkle on top. Perhaps some of the others would be brighter, HE-400/500/6.
This is all IMO, of course.
