I hear ya regarding subscriptions but I gave in to the 'subscription service economy' a while back. I resisted but it's pretty much where things stand these days. There was a time when you bought something like software and used it for several years. It's mostly all subscription based now. I'm still holding out on my old 2016 version of Microsoft Office for Mac. I can outright buy the 2024 version for $149 for use on one computer OR get a Microsoft Office 365 subscription for up to 5 computers for $99/year. Since I have a few computers around here including my wife's I'll probably give in to the subscription soon.
A streaming subscription to Qobuz is only $12.99/mo and you can always cancel.
Buy Office outright at $149.99ea x2 computers for me and my wife
Or subscribe at $99.99/year for use on up to 5 computers
Forget Google Docs, StarOffice, OpenOffice, LibraOffice, NeoOffice, and the various forks, etc. Been there done that. They work but they're junk compared to the best in class and business-standard MS Office.

The primary reason for owning it was, and still is, Excel.
There's really nothing added to Excel after 2007 that made the product better, IMO. Everything in Office after 2007 was to make it more collaborative and to incrementally force users to a 365 subscription.
The business of end user computing services was my livelihood for over 40 years.
I really like Excel and used it during my career, but Numbers comes with my Macs and is more than adequate for the spreadsheets I do in retirement, mainly a quarterly cash flow analysis I developed.
