Has anyone tried a homemade version of this design approach, in other words using small left, center, and right speakers mounted under a TV like a sound bar connected to an AVR?

  Yup.
  
  The soundbar plus required electronics is around $10K US. And you still need to add an AV Pre-Pro to complete the setup.
