I recently ran into a store that had a Steele Dan Gaucho DVD-A (new) in stock at its original price. Although I am not at all a fan of rock music, this disc seems to have a mystic about it that transcends its genre. I would like to know from those who more knowledgeable than I is your opinion of this album in DVD-A format. Specifically, how do you evaluate this performance, and as important, how do you evaluate the DVD-A sonics?
Thanks.
Pete

and IMO it has three pretty decent tracks and is a nice recording for sure. Babylon Sister, Hey Nineteen and My Rival are the tracks I listen to when I play it, I skip the rest. But that's about the best any of their albums do for me.

... on the sacd, not sure about the dvda. Sure, it's not the musical masterpiece that Aja was but still great tracks. If you like SD and want a modern surround sound sonic masterpiece, check out Donald Fagen's Morph The Cat.

I would rather hear any of the six previously recorded Steely Dan titles on lossy MP3 than Gaucho in multichannel 24/192. If you want to hear Steely Dan, pick something else.

I had been biting my tongue... Gaucho is another audiophile example of a technically perfect recording married to poor music. If anybody wants my copy you can have it for half of its original retail plus postage.

great DVDA. If it is original price, I'd grab it. The only way you would be disappointed is if you just didn't like the music. Sound is great and definitely a cut above the CD.
they made a dts version too. if it the bigger dvd-a case one with 96 24 6 channel Id buy it. im playing it and it sounds good. I use to collect all the formats. some discs state the speaker placment for dvd audio. it not behind you but on the sides. they all need to be the same distance about 8 ft from the lisening position. theres a wider one too. this one has lirics that you can read as the music is playing plus photos. I think you will like it because its not really rock music. its like jazz rock. mello music.

DVD-A is to be enjoyed in surround sound on a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 system.
the DVD-A's with 2 channel 24bit PCM tracks for?
Cheers,

my panasonic bd dvd-a disc player info say 6 channel ppcm in dvd audio but there no info past 5 channel. even fed hdmi it defalts to 5.1 but more speakers can play . I would like to see if there any more info on the discs but I dont know how to play it. I use to have the back analogs on my player hooked up but there was no info. it must be the player reading it wrong. I put it in a denon with d-link it said 5.1 ppcm

I have it, but may prefer the CD version. Partly for dynamics and partly because I find having musicians behind me strange. I going back towards focusing on better stereo CD sound and am not well set up for nor into surround music (although DSOTM is great in surround SACD).
If you don't like the music, don't bother. On the other hand, it's probably the best sound quality of a DVD-A disc that I have (I don't have many). I also have, in order of best to worst sound quality: Bjork, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Marley, Motorhead.
