Are most DVD-A discs simply remastered from older an original analogue master tape, or were some based on new recording sessions and mastered directly onto 24/96 PCM? I would be interested in seeking out any that were new recorded directly onto 24/96 PCM where the performance and the sonics were truly outstanding.
Any suggestions of specific titles?
Pete

I assume some go back to the original analog master tapes.
Upsampling from 16/44 seems completely pointless, other than as a way to extract more money from the gullible or uninformed. You can't restore what was lost when the music was first converted to digital.
I have gone two ways with DVD-A:
1 - I download 24bit 96/192khz LIN masters or
2 - I just record it from the performer myself.
I use Disc Welder Bronze to cut my own DVD-As (TDK- DVD) regardless of original source. When I record I use Behringer valve mics and valve preamp and 24 bit/96k A-2-D.
Play back is via Oppo-980H (heavily modded) or BDP-83SE, valve preamp and power amp. Love my tubes!

Hello Pete,
in my experience most DVD Audio titles are up sampled from 44/16 or 48/16 or even from 48/24.
It was difficult in the past, and it's still difficult today, to find native 96/24 or 192/24 stereo DVD Audio titles.I found several good examples of amazing DVD Audio titles, from Classic Records (no available thought Acoustic Sounds), taken directly from the original master tapes. Excellent job.
The link is http://store.acousticsounds.com/c/140/HDAD_24/96_24/192If you want the most accurate and fantastic example of what a true native 192/24 stereo recording is at the present time, you will find some titles from Claudio Records, the link is http://www.claudiorecords.com/192S.html
They also produce the AMAZING DVD Audio sampler that Cambridge Audio offers with their flagship DVD Audio (also Blu-Ray video and audio, and SACD player) model 751BD.Disclaimer:
I'm NOT affiliated with either AcousticSounds OR with Claudio Records, BUT I'm a happy costumer from both!Hugo Rosa.
Best regards.

if a DVD-A disc is upsampled from a master tape, or recorded directly to digital at 24/96 or 24/192. One label that I know of -- AIX -- definitely records directly to digital at 24/96, and the sonics are excellent. Unfortunately, the performers are local talent that few have ever heard of.

To tell if a SACD/DVD-A has been upsampled, you need a software program like Sound Forge or Audacity.
Not the live version. The studio version is about the best-sounding recording I have ever heard...

I was hoping the next post was from Chris (a holiday greeting or, better yet, the announcement of this venue at AA closing due to the nearly nonexistent traffic).
But since I'm a nice guy, I'll play along -- click the link below. Not everyones' favorite flavor of music genres, but the audio delivered is absolutely first rate sound quality recorded direct to 24/96 digital. You can also use the SEARCH function here at AA to read comments about AIX Records.
