Are there any medium cost ($200-$300) DVD-A players available, or perhaps a Blu-ray player that supports DVD-A? Trying to find one for a friend, but not having much luck, mostly used units of unknown true condition.

Playstation 3 will play them i just discovered
Marantz has several Blu ray universal players. Just check Amazon.
I have a Samsung C6500 BluRay player. One review mentioned that it plays DVD-A discs, even though it's not billed to play them. So I tried it with the only DVD-A disc I have (Beatles "Love"), and it played DVD-A via HDMI, 24 bit 96K multichannel. This player is selling for $150-160 at many stores and online dealers. By the way, it does a decent job with the video portion of BluRays and DVDs, and it wirelessly streams Netflix, Vudu, Pandora, and YouTube (but not Hulu or Hulu Plus) from your home WiFi network.
If you have a receiver that can handle DVD-A via HDMI, this is a fine bargain.
Sure, the Oppo players mentioned, MUSE Erato II and Polyhymnia, Ayre C5xeMP, Esoteric UZ1, and I am sure there are others.
I'm using a Cambridge Audio DVD89 Universal player (plays DVD-Audio, SACD & DVD-Video). I paid $170 plus S&H for a demo unit. I believe they still have them in stock at Audio Adviser.
Cheers

Denon DBP-1611UD will play Blu-Ray, DVD, SACD, DVD-A, and everything else. Its street price is $400. I couldn't find anything less than that. Above that price is the Oppo BDP-93 for $500, and of course the sky's the limit...
There is an Onkyo Universal player (but not BluRay) model selling for $294 described at onecall.com as "coming soon":
