I have a newer Sony Blue-Ray player (forget the model; something 350) and it plays DVD-Audio disks. It was less than $200. I assume it plays SACDs, of course, but I don't have any. It's interesting that it plays the competing format.
Follow Ups:
I have a Sony S350 Blu-Ray player and it neither plays DVD-Audio or SACD discs.
Granted it will play a DVD-Audio disc by accessing the Dolby Digital or DTS tracks only, but the PPCM DVD-Audio tracks.. NO WAY. Also none of the new Sony Blu-Ray players play SACD at all.
Sorry.
I guess you're right, it's playing the DTS portion of the disks. I only have a few disks and they all work in the Sony, but they must have multiple groups of tracks.
I'm new to the DVD-A thing and only got the disks to use in the car, wich has 5.1 surround and a true DVD-A player (it has the DVD Audio logo on it and plays in PPCM format).
So is PPCM a higher resolution 2 channel format?
PPCM is Packed PCM
On DVD-A it's usually higher resolution than CDs - usually 24b/96kHz stereo, or in some rare discs 24/192. In 5.1 it's usually 24/48
you can have 5.1 PPCM and 2.0PPCM in the DVD-Audio area, and DD or DTS in the DVD-V area
Some discs (Porcupine Tree's Lightbulb Sun, for one) even have unpacked high resolution stereo PCM in the DVD-V area so you can access it even if you don't have a DVD-Audio compatible player and this is useful if you connect the player to an outboard DAC (optical or coax)
DVD-A registry
Thanks! Nice link too.
PCM can be almost any resolution.

I meant higher than CDs. I read a little more about Packed PCM (PPCM) and I understand a little more. It is confusing though because it seems like these disks can have many different formats on them and when you add in the marketing piece and the way they are packaged it's really crazy.
But like I said, I'm new to DVD-A.
Yup. PCM can be CD quality. It can be much more. It can be less although I do not know of any such.

I have yet to hear of any Sony player that will do DVD-A. Can you tell us the model designation?
