1. I usualy post on the Planar Asylum, but I am at wits end as they say. Yamaha 5.1 receiver(with FM), 5 small speakers etc. used with my old Tube Sony.
2. I buy new Sony 42" XBR., when watching Direct TV, if I want to switch over to my favorite FM station, the sound is at least twice as loud, maybe more, as if the speakers will blow out. I must turn volumn down to almost inaudable BEFORE I make the switch.
YES I TURNED THE SOUND (INTERNALY) OFF VIA THE XBR setup options AND REQUESTED EXTERNAL SOUND SYSTEM SOUND ONLY.
I have tried everything, 1 or 2 more times and my speakers (EPOS ELS3`s)will blow. Thanks for any help.
Len W
The dangerous thing here is, if I shut down after watching the Direct TV and turn on only FM the next day the volumn is at full blast, the catch being you can`t turn it down until you turn it on.
This can`t be right, having a note in front of you to remind you to turn the volumn way down before shutting Direct TV off (remember Direct TV sound is OFF)

"as I increase the volume on the AVR, the coresponding "number" (readout on AVR panel) decreases, as I lower the volume, the number increases?"
that is strange - on my AVR the number increases from -70 (min) to +(something). My normal listening volume is between -35 and -30 for TV/DVDs and -45 to -40 for music CDs

see if the yamaha has intelligent volume control.if not my older onkyos have it.thats strange that the fm is so loud.Ive never had to use the intelegent control.good luck

Are you feeding the sound to the AVR from the TV or directly from the DirectTV box? Are you feeding it as analog or digital?

I am feeding the sound to the AVR directly from the DirectTV receiver,(not from the XBR) feeding it as an analog signal (R+L RCA`s) into the Yamaha 5.1.
Thanks for your interest, Len W
Something seems odd, I don`t remember this before...
as I increase the volume on the AVR, the coresponding "number" (readout on AVR panel) decreases, as I lower the volume, the number increases?
that the cable box has its analog volume turned down so that the FM comes on too loud? Have you maximized the output level on the cable box?
As for the readout, that is one common setup where the numbers indicate how many dB below reference level you have it set. Many AVRs will let you choose the alternative display.
