Never listened to it, but tried it out as something to possibly modify. I rejected it because it has possibly the worst user interface of any disc player I have ever used.
I had such bad experiences with the 2500 that I will never touch another yamaha anything!

The 1500 (and I strongly suspect the 2500 also) was actually a Philips player in disguise. Every single PCB inside had the Philips logo on it. That explains why it was such a piece of junk.
That generation of players was quickly replaced by new models. I would be surprised if they still used the Philips design. The models prior to the 1500/2500 were modified Panasonics that worked wonderfully.
So it might not be that bad to at least try another Yamaha product, as long as the place you buy it from offers a 30 day return policy.

Here is the inside of my Yamaha DVD-S1700 which has given me almost 2 years of trouble-free performance. I can not say the same thing for my previous players! It still plays every disc perfectly every single time and only takes seconds to read the TOC.
I bought it because the transport was whisper quiet, and it still is inaudible. I hate it when I hear that whirley-dirley disc spinning sound during quiet moments especially with Classical music. All of my previous units made transport noise, the worst being Toshiba DVD-Audio players.
Anyway I highly recommend the S-1700 which can be got cheap as it has been replaced by the S-1800 which one of the review I've read is even better, I might get an S-1800 as a back up player as soon as it has been out for a while and the price drops.

Here is the link where a reader discusses his comparisons between the S-1700 and S-1800. This letter was what perked my interested in the S-1800. I love my S-1700 but his writer compare them both as he describes in the letter.

This is the only real Review I could found for the S-1800, it is not as detailed as I like.

I did notice while trying to find these again that the S-1800 can be had for $249 which is $200 lower than it's retail price of $450!
