Steven Wilson: Juke Box Jury of One
Porcupine Tree's leader -- and the band's own multichannel mixer -- gives his thoughts on other artists' surround releases, from the Beatles to Nine Inch Nails.
Sure, you know that Elliot Scheiner, Frank Filipetti, and other producer/engineers are fans of surround sound. But among artists, you’ll find no bigger champion of multichannel music than Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson.
After learning the craft and art of surround mixing while watching Scheiner at work on PT’s In Absentia (2002) and Deadwing (2005; see earlier interview), Wilson went on to mix by himself the band’s current album, Fear of a Blank Planet (2007). He then turned to making surround versions of some back-catalog titles, including Stupid Dream (1999) and the just-reissued Lightbulb Sun (2000).

You're kiddinga veritable genius. the man behind Porcupine Tree, Bass Communion, no-man, and various other projects (Blackfield etc)
mixed all Porcupine Tree DVD-As after In Absentia and the excellent Arriving Somewhere concert DVD
Probably you have no Danny O'keefe (I have 6 CDs), so we are even.
I didn't realize there was a competition and we needed to be 'even'
you can be ahead if you want

That's why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors. And I have about fifteen King Crimson including Thrak and Argentina. So its not like I know nothing about prog rock.
... that anyone hanging out in a DVD-A forum would have heard _of_ at least one of PT's excellent DVD-As. my bad :)Anyway here they are (they all pop up in recommended lists all the time) Whats nice is that we can probably expect any new output from SW to be on CD+DVD-A
Stupid Dream (1999, DVD-A 2006)
Lightbulb Sun (2000, DVD-A 2008)
In Absentia (2003, DVD-A 2004)
Deadwing (2005, DVD-A 2005)
Fear of A Blank Planet (2007)FoaBP was a Grammy nominee for surround mixing only to lose out to Beatles' Love DVD-A
Steven's other projects also have DVD-AsNo-man:
Together We're Stranger (2003)
Schoolyard Ghosts (2008)(from Wiki: Originally creating a sample-based proto-Trip-Hop/Ambient/Electro-Pop styled music, No-Man's sound has become more organic, diverse and band-orientated in subsequent years. The band was lauded "Conceivably the most important English group since The Smiths" by Melody Maker music newspaper.)
Bass Communion:
Loss (2006)
Pacific Codex (2008)(from Wiki: Bass Communion's albums have often featured collaborations from other musicians, including Robert Fripp of King Crimson, saxophonist Theo Travis, Bryn Jones (also known as Muslimgauze), and Vidna Obmana.
The records released under the name Bass Communion are in an ambient or electronic vein - lengthy drone-heavy compositions. They come about as experiments in texture made from processing the sound of real instruments and field recordings.)

Has In Absentia presented itself?

great start. Stars Die recaps the earlier PT (zoned out phase *LOL* I love Voyage 34, Sky Moves Sideways). From In Absentia, Trains is a concert favorite. Enjoy the albums!
The SQ and surround mixing of the DVD-As improve with each subsequent release; Lightbulb Sun (the latest DVD-A) surround mix is all at once more subtle and immersive. In Ansentia sounds slightly harsh in comparison

We don't need no, thought control....no dark sarcasm in the classroom..

Man what a resume. What do you recommend?
I do have 1 Danny Elfman though.
he's an obsessive prog rock fan

I am guessing he had no clue of the questions beforehand and that he is really that much of a prog rock geek.
you, you'd have to grow up with it to know these things.

Robert Fripp has made a couple of guest appearances on Porcupine Tree releases. I seem to remember some show with Fripp, Belew and Wilson at one point. Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison is currently on tour with King Crimson along with Pat Medesto.
If your a King Crimson fan then go out and get all the PT you can lay your hands on. Truly modern prog rock with state of the art sound, 2 channel or surround. I would start with Signfly or later.
I think that was "Signify" ;)
Fripp played on Fear of A Blank Planet and solos on the accompanying Nil Recurring EP
