I have a Toshiba SD9200 DVD-A player; wonderful machine, when it's not noisy. I purchased the Beatles new "Love" CD and DVD-Audio Disc, and I'm a bit confused. On the album jacket it says: PCM Stereo, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1. Now here's what happens when I play the disc: I don't get any "audio" choices, as I do on many other discs. I'm listening only in two-channel, no multichannel here. There is an "audio" button on the remote which allows you to choose your preference. When I hit the button the information say DTS 5.1 etc., etc,. I cannot change the audio to two-channel 24/96. Am I missing something here? Has anyone experienced similar problems? Is the CD mislabeled. Why do they have to make DVD-Audio so difficult? Thanks.
Your Toshiba player is obviously set up to default to DVD-Audio mode.
The 2ch PCM content on the Love disc is located in the "Video" section of the disc. In order to access it, you must change the default on your player to DVD-Video mode. You will then get a menu that gives you a choice to select PCM. You cannot access this selection if the player is set to DVD-Audio.
The PPCM in the DVD-Audio section is 24/96, but I don't believe that the 2ch LPCM on the Love disc is 24/96. I think it's 16/48. Someone will be sure to correct me if that's not so ;-)
Thanks racerguy. That worked. I don't understand what you mean by PPCM though. Another question: Are you telling me that I should always leave the Toshiba on DVD-Video? Or, do I need to toggle between Video and Audio according to what kind of disc I'm using? There are all kinds of new DVD's out there today. For instance: Dual-Discs, pure DVD-Audios, DVD's etc. How does one know what one is listening to. I've owned my Toshiba for about four years, but never used it for Audio. I had it connected to a video system only. Recently I decided to remove it and put it in my dedicated Audio system. I'm replacing it with a Blu-Ray for video. No wonder SACD is the preferred choice among audiophiles. So many questions, sorry. John

No.

Yes and no. If a disc has no DVD-Audio content on it, the player will automatically access the DVD-Video content, even if the player is set to default to DVD-Audio. If the disc does have DVD-Audio content, then it gets more complicated, as you've discovered.
Since DVD-Audio was invented after DVD-Video was out for a while, there are some significant shortcomings in many areas, as you are discovering. One of the problems is the player "default" mode. Most DVD-Audio players will, when set to default to DVD-Audio mode, completely ignore anything in the video_TS directory on the disc. If there's interesting material in that directory, you'll never see it without changing the player's setup. Unfortunately, there are no enforced standards for disc authoring, and labeling standards are equally bad, so figuring out what's on a disc and how to access it can be a challenge, even with a video monitor connected.
