I'm a big believer in using a high quality power supply with my digital gear. So, when I ordered my Auralic Vega S1 Streamer DAC I went ahead and ordered the $999 Aux Power Supply.
It's early days - as in only one day - but I've been testing the Vega S1 with and without the $1000 power supply. I'm not hearing a $1000 difference. The Vega S1 sounds great either way.
This explains why every review I read about this device before I purchased said that the power supply didn't do much for the extra money.
I'd hate to be someone that would stick with the power supply even though I don't see the need for it, just because that's what audiophiles are supposed to do. It's returnable with a 20% restocking fee... so, I'd save $800. I'll keep doing some testing with and without the power supply to make a final decision.
Follow Ups:
After 4-days without the Auralic power supply I went back to the $1000 S1-External Power Supply and clearly I was wrong. it's noticeably smoother and more detailed with the PSU in place.
I finally connected my CD Transport to the Vega S1 to use it's DAC and output via USB. Another win. Sounds great.
Unlike most other ESS Sabre DACs of old, the Vega S1 is smooth, a tad warmish and easy to live with.
As they say in Stereophile... "Highly Recommended."
appears to already have a decent linear. Wide dynamic range content might benefit from additional stiffness.
