By the way, I bit the bullet and sent my Cronus Magnum II in for an upgrade to a Cronus Dark. They start the job tomorrow and should have it complete by the end of the week.

Follow Ups:
The top shelf of my small audio rack has a turntable -OR- the Cronus Magnum on it. I still enjoy listening to it and tube rolling it. My last tube rolling adventure had me impressed with KT-77 power tubes. The turntable is there at the moment but I'll be swapping it out soon.
I've kind of lost track of Rogue's product line. They lost me with "dark". I'm not sure what that really means. Hopefully it's a worthwhile upgrade for your Cronus Magnum II. You'll have to let us all know how it compares against the stock Cronus Magnum II.

Will do.The upgrade involves all new boards. Only the case and transformers are retained.
My unit started humming after I did something stupid so it needed servicing anyway. I'm not sure I would have done the upgrade otherwise.
I was using JJ 6CA7s for awhile and enjoyed them. But one of them became noisy and when I reinserted the KT120s I liked them more than I'd remembered.

I went in a different direction about a year ago. I ran KT120's for quite a while as they put out more power for my power hungry Thiel speakers. When I put the Thiels in the closet and brought the Tannoys into the room that opened up more possibilities for lower power output tubes. It's interesting that sometimes I just like hearing a different sound. I might try the KT120's again.

I used the KT120s at first and then tried 6550 tubes which I preferred a bit for their sweeter top end. Then I went with JJ KT88s, which I didn't like in that amp but are very nice in my CJ Premier 11A (a bit more bite than 6550s), then JJ EL34IIs, and finally the 6CA7s for about a year. I loved the EL34s and 6CA7s, but when I put the KT120s back in I think I realized I liked them the most for their overall balance and oomph.
But as you say, it could partly be the fun of a new sound.
