I have tried a few with some success, but I am after something which really works well without freezing-up and has a better than HEOS app.
I have tried a couple of Fiio DAPs, a Cambridge CXN, and I currently have an Eversolo DMP-A6. The Eversolo is the best of the bunch, but is still prone to freezing-up.
It's not the unit or the SSD M.2 because it works fine on the unit's touch screen, but the app is a different story.
I have the DMP-A6 hardwired (CAT7) to the router (350 Mbps) and the Wi-Fi feed where I use the app is very strong according to a Wi-Fi signal strength app.
Budget is $1500 max. Recommendations from those who use a SSD are what I am most interested in. I have no desire to stream from any services as I have over 5k CDs ripped to digital files. My only other use for it is radioparadise.
Follow Ups:
I have the A8 coupled to an external Samsung USB-C SSD. It has never locked up on me. Could it be your SSD ? Maybe try a totally different one.
I run a RPi 5 as an LMS server. Currently using a NAS for local storage but switched to that less than a year ago. Previously the RPi (4B at that point) had its own dedicated 4TB drive. The setup runs flawlessly managing 5925 albums with 63581 songs by 13552 artists on the drive. (I also have Qobuz which LMS integrates nicely with my local collection.)
The LMS server provides music for 2 speaker systems and 2 headphone setups. Plenty of tweaks that one can apply to the RPi with a LPS and other mods. Then one is free to use a variety of different players. I have another RPi as an end point sending USB out to a DAC, two other setups with WiiM units (Pro+ and Ultra) and a final unit with another RPi with a DAC2HD hat. Endless options at the player end -- one can get as fancy/expensive or simple/budget as one likes.
I did, But my reservations are it may be too complicated for me to operate, and it also means having a computer in operation, which I am keen to avoid.
Have you tried connecting your hard drive to the Wiim Ultra? I'm interested to know if it can handle such a thing with so many songs?
As respects "having a computer in operation" -- well, all streamers are a computer, just one dedicated to a single specific use. You can set up a RPi as a dedicated streamer using piCorePlayer software. The initial setup takes a bit of work (downloading and burning the OS image to a micro SD card) and then some configuration to match the streamer to whatever DAC is used, but from there on, it is as solid as a rock.
I haven't tried connecting a drive directly to my Ultra and probably won't try since my collection is on a NAS, not a USB drive. The WiiM app is very nice but I believe I've read that it currently has some limitations when it comes to managing a plugged in drive. However, WiiM is frequently updating their software and firmware so some currently missing features will likely be available in the near future.
You might want to ask your questions over at the WiiM forum. Link is shown below. As for my experience with the Ultra, count me very impressed with this unit, especially so for the price.
Will do. Thanks for the info.
My A8 has never freezed up reading my external SSD.
