My DAC sounds better then used wide open, and it's a bit of a pain because my preamp ( a Pass B1) doesn't have a remote. I only sometimes use the DAc's volume control when watching movies with huge dynamic range at night, but I wouldn't use it for critical music listening.
Follow Ups:
I use an AI Modulus 2C pre-amp and it has no remote. I need a remote so I set the max volume I need on the preamp (in my case, only 2 notches from the bottom.) When the sound is too loud, I reduce the volume with the DAC remote, and it works fine but there is a gradual loss of quality as you go down in volume. I do not really have a problem between the range of 80-100 though.
I sought out a DAC with fixed line level. I did not want my DAC to have a variable output. My previous DAC , a RME had everything. Remote volume, filters, eq, it was loaded. It sounded excellent but I'll do without the bells and whistles for better sound.
My current pre has no remote either so I just get off my ass.
I'm having a preamp built and it will have remote volume.
