For Bluesound fans...
Major update BluOS 4.0 was released in October 2023 with ongoing bug fixes. Pretty normal for a major software update. The latest BluOS 4.2.0 was released today. Additionally, the popular Bluesound Node has been on sale for $449 almost everywhere (regular price $599). It can't be any good because it's too cheap for true audiophiles ;-)
A pretty good YouTube summary from some dude at Upscale Audio:

BluOS 4.2 update
P.S. I don't own a Bluesound Node or other products that run BluOS. I have no experience with BluOS.
Follow Ups:
This update is mostly cosmetic, with little change to any functions except that now some of them don't even work!
For about a week, I couldn't delete anything from Qobuz favorites or playlists. There was no delete option presented on the dropdown menu.
Now I get an error message to "Retry" whenever I enter anything in the search bar, and sometimes it closes the app altogether. Very frustrating.
I would not recommend this OS to anyone. In fact, if this continues, I'm dumping the hardware to find something that actually works.
berate is 8 and benign is 9

Roon is very active and continually updating their software, adding features, and fixing bugs.
Is open source community based software always less buggy? Or is the main attraction the price ?
;-)

Just kidding. I get your point.

I've used the search, add, and delete functions with Amazon Music since the upgrade and have had no problems. Strange... You'd think an update would be more thoroughly tested. I'm using it on a Kindle Fire.

Steve
I disabled BluOS v4 and it supposedly reset to the previous version. But that version has some bugs in it so I'm going to reinstall a previous version that works well. Buggy updates have happened many times over the past six years but eventually they fix the bugs and things work fairly well.
one Album at a time in the play queue. Am I missing something or is it not fixed yet?
I just tried loading up more than one album and it works as long as you don't "Play Now". If you "Play Next" or "Add Last" it works. It appears that they introduced some bugs when they upgraded.

Thank You! Yes, I used the ADD Next and it worked great.
You're welcome. There used to be a great BluOS forum where owners would share experiences with the app, both good and bad. Some good solutions were discussed and BluOS insiders would reply to questions and help troubleshoot problems. But that faded away and the forum became more of a complaint department. Too bad because it was helpful when people shared solutions.
I've dabbled with the new Version 4 on my Android phone and iPad and I'm finding problems with the Playlist. I spend time adding individual tracks that once played disappear from this list. I may not want that! Worse still is if I decide to jump forward or select a new track using Play Next or Play Now. Disaster! All previous tracks, even the un-played ones vanish and can't be recovered.
Can anyone suggest a remedy such that an unsaved Playlist remains intact until I decide to ditch it or save it - as with V3?
Here's a screenshot of Version 3 on Windows - If I was using V4, and I skip to select Bella Donna, the previous 4 tracks disappear, even though they may not have been played. Thanks
I'm giving up on Version 4 (disabled it) because it's lost important functionality. You can't easily scroll through album or artist listings like before and you can't specify albums or artists (from a NAS library) in searches so it searches everything; not helpful. Once again it appears that BluOS is catering to people that use streaming services as their primary music source.
Not sure I follow you with your Library problem. I've just done an arbitrary Search of my Library (for "Adams") on both V3 (on Windows PC) and V4 (on Android) and results are identical. Could you elaborate?
If I go to my Artists or Composers list (which I never do as they are totally useless, particularly for Classical), neither version will offer only Artist matches - ie Search is a search of your entire Library and never of just Artists or Composers, etc. The results though are listed under separate sub-sections - Albums, Artists, Composers, etc whether using V3 or V4.
For good Library results, best in my view is to use Folders after you have moved wrongly filed albums into their proper folder. Then if you have main sub-folders as (for example) Classical, Non-Classical, World & Weird, Jazz or whatever, when you open Folders, then the sub-folder of interest, you have a relatively short list of all your artists or composers of that genre, depending on how you've arranged your folders. It's so much simpler and clearer than messing about with metadata or trying to find something by a Search.
I rarely use the search function so I may be misremembering but I could have sworn I could search just album titles. The main reason I went back a version is that I like to peruse albums on the NAS library by using the scroll button on the right hand side of the screen, which shows up when you first start scrolling. I can grab the button and move it up or down the screen to stop at a particular alphabet letter and then slowly scroll through that section of the library to choose an album to listen to. It's like a high speed perusal of my LP or CD collections. The latest version of BluOS broke that function.
I love my BlueSound Vault (original). I have stuck with the old software for now (you can switch between freely) as I like the old interface better...probably since I am used to it.
I particularly like the Vault 1 (not the later ones) because it works from a wall wart powersupply rather than having a builtin supply. This means I can run it from a battery pack and that is what I do. This significantly improved the sound.
The other thing that I do to give it a performance jump is that I reclock the signal with a Mutec MC3+ reclocker. Huge improvement...recommened for every streamer.
This combo (BlueSound and clocker) sounds very good and I have tried out but not been tempted to buy something much more expensive.
I've been using the new app on my Android phone and it's an improvement in some ways, mainly layout and certain menu choices, but it's not as big a change as they make it out to be. For streaming subscribers the changes probably are a noticeable improvement but I don't use streaming services so for someone like me, who mainly streams from a NAS drive with occasional use of a dozen internet radio presets, the changesare more aesthetic than functional. Changes for the better nonethelessmade it much more difficult to scroll through album and artist lists and searching specifically for albums or artists is not very efficient.

Love mine.
a "true audiophile" would prefer something other than a fenced-in one box solution. Seems everyone and his brother makes mods to replace its SMPS.
Say an RPi4 with linear power supply as endpoint using a Topping DAC with op amp sockets added that would allow for easy upgrades along with a linear for it. Easily do that for same price.
Even Amir doesn't like the Bluesound. ;)
My Vault (version 1) was the only BlueSound product that has a DC input. So, I went with a battery pack...sounds great.
The digital out is only Toslink but once reclocked sounds great.
Maybe an ueber streamer would be better but this easily dusted an upper model Auralic and was competitive with other quite expensive solutions.
I use a Node as a transport/bridge and it functions quite well playing albums from a NAS drive. I would, however, like to see Lenbrook (NAD/Bluesound) offer a transport only version without the DAC/preamp functions.
well supported and essentially plug and play. A transport only version with linear power supply would be nice and presumably at a lower price.
It's extremely difficult, however, IMHO to compete with Raspberry PI based transports near this price point. Some DIY involved but provides only what you need for a small piece of change. I have one just as backup to the main streamer.
I could go the DIY route but my stereo system/music budget allows me (within reasonable limits) to splurge on plug-and-play options. A transport/streamer built with quality components and a reliable OS and streaming app can be worth the additional cost.
I noticed that you use a Sonore ultraRendu, which I haven't considered until recently because I've been a BluOS user, with five Bluesound devices scattered around the house. But BluOS can be irritating to use at times so I'm seriously considering moving to the Roon platform for my main stereo system. That opens up a range of transport/streamer options, the ultraRendu being one of them. But I'm also considering the Roon Nucleus, which seems like a component I can afford, is very much plug-and-play using Roon, and will provide many years of relatively maintenance-free enjoyment.
You PAY FOR Roon but great products are often not FREE. On the other hand LMS / piCorePlayer are very popular and won't cost you a dime.
If you go the Roon route I highly recommend NOT buying a Nucleus. You can save a ton of money by just installing Roon on a decent PC/Mac.... preferably a small quiet one like a Mac Mini or Intel NUC.
The installation and setup are very user friendly as are software updates. Roon default settings just work but you do have a lot of flexibility to change things if you choose to dig deeper.
I hadn't considered using a PC or laptop but I do have a Win10 Pro laptop that I'm replacing with a Win11 laptop. The older laptop could be cleaned up to run with bare bones software and Roon. I'm assuming that I could park the Roon laptop just about anywhere there's an Ethernet connection and use my Android phone as the controller in the stereo room.
You can use a phone or larger screen tablet to navigate and control Roon. I use my iPad or the big screen TV in the basement. While my iPhone will work I prefer having more screen real estate. On a related note Audirvana used to be my favorite and was quite good. They keep improving it and I just read they have a nice remote control feature now for iOS or Android devices.

Wow, that's a lot of features for a very reasonable annual cost. And now an app for Android phones. Hmmm...
which is free and has been essentially trouble-free for over ten years. It supports a wide range of streamers from iPhones/pads, Android devices, RPI, Sonore products, Win, MacOS, etc.
They can be used simultaneously with different content or synchronized. Just doesn't deliver the rich metadata found with Room.
