Hi, in the quest to have a simple path for an audio signal coming from my Dynaco ST35 and going to a preamp I spent time as a hobby building passive preamps.I used the best components I could find and kept things as simple as possible.Alps Black Beauty pots, gold jacks, silver wire, ect. All was well until a while back I took a chance and bought this little buffer preamp the FX O1 off Ebay for 35 bucks. It is made in China. It blew all the passives away. One option was to invest 20 more bucks for 2 GE tubes. It is built like a tank, has 1 stereo volume control,I'm not sure of the make, looks like a Bourns, and gold jacks. As good as it sounds or doesn't, it puts on a light show like a planetarium in the dark with 2 LED's near the tube sockets.EStat or MHardy came up with a picture of the innards sometime ago,I will try to dig it up.Thanks you,you guys.
So it's hot today and I dug out a Stereophile with a review by Jason Victor Serinus a few months ago with his review of a line preamp called the Engstrom Monica Mark 3 line preamp.I think the cost was a mere 60 thousand dollars. There were no internal pictures provided in Jason's review. What's inside for that kind of coin?, I keep asking myself. It may have more switching ability but will more components in a line preamp or buffer, both tubed, offer a better sound or non sound? Just a little question that's been puzzling me, take care, Mark Korda

looks like a $29 aliexpress special?
Most people never look under the hood before buying a car.
Hi, here is the inside picture,Mark
The case says "Made by NFJ & FX Audio". Probably North Flat Japan. It looks much like the NFJ Tube-01J, which according to this: http://nfjapan.com/newsrelease/tube01j.pdf is priced at 4,480 yen (equivalent to about $28).[Edit] - I misread your post and thought this is what was being sold for $60k! So your price of $35 was right on - probably included shipping :-) Some people swear by a good buffer stage to help match impedances - maybe that's why you say it sounds better than the passives you've tried.

Offer $59,000?
Someone will pay the asking price and to them it'll likely be worth it.
