Within 30 days before he was shot there, Lincoln had been at Ford's Theater to see and hear Mozart's "Magic Flute," which must have been sung in German, because there was not a singable English translation until after WWII.

I think that that is totally incongruous with the image most people have of Lincoln. But it also shows that before movies, radio, and TV, opera was the entertainment for a much broader swath of society than it is today.

I grew up in the opera house; my dad was technical director of the Pittsburgh Opera for many years.

    One of my memories, probably when I was about 10, was seeing two men in a hissing catfight.
