In Reply to: RE: Rushton - what did you think of the different venues on that Bruckner album? posted by Chris from Lafayette on January 22, 2025 at 14:45:03
I think it obvious that the two different locations were dictated by what performance was scheduled when and where. I work both venues and record what is available and permitted. I do, by the way, appreciate both St Florian and the Moores Opera House - totally different acoustics, but each satisfying to my ear, so no apologies.
Psalm 146 was also performed, and recorded by me, in St Florian in 2023, but release was vetoed by the Brucknertage admins due to intonation and ensemble problems with the chorus. I lobbied for the 2024 performance in Houston to rectify this and get the splendid work to a greater public, which was successful IMO.

Follow Ups:
I think the very dry locale, I was thinking of was at Rice University (?).I just downloaded the album earlier today and, now that I've actually HEARD it, I can say that I was very happy with BOTH locations!
You may get a kick out of Ms. CfL's comments as she was listening (in an adjoining room). When we got to the fugue which concludes Psalm 146 (which BTW I do not recall having heard before and I'm pretty sure she had never heard before), she started making "editorial comments" about Bruckner's compositional process:
"Just what I thought he'd do!""I could have predicted the way that entrance would go there!"
"Yup - another place where he does just what I expected!"
When the work had finished, she told me, "that's not a bad piece, but it's SO predictable - I just hope I don't get that fugue subject stuck in my head all night!" ;-)OTOH, she was pleasantly surprised by the D-minor Mass. (She's a natural Bruckner skeptic and hates it whenever Bruckner starts in with his "blaring brass"!
